Meghalaya Chief Minister condemns alleged racial harassment of three Arunachal Pradesh women in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, calls it a setback to India’s pluralism
Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday strongly condemned the alleged racial abuse and intimidation of three women from Arunachal Pradesh in New Delhi, terming the incident “unacceptable” and a “serious setback to India’s diversity and unity.”
The Chief Minister’s remarks came after reports emerged that the women were allegedly targeted by their neighbours in Malviya Nagar, South Delhi, following a disagreement linked to repair work in their rented apartment.
Reacting to the incident, Sangma said such acts of racial discrimination against citizens from the Northeast reflect deep-rooted prejudice and must be addressed firmly. He stressed that India’s strength lies in its diversity, and incidents of racial harassment undermine the constitutional values of equality and dignity.
“Such behaviour is completely unacceptable and goes against the spirit of India’s unity in diversity. Citizens from the Northeast must feel safe and respected anywhere in the country,” the Chief Minister said in a statement.
According to police officials, the incident occurred around 3.30 pm on February 20, when drilling and electrical installation work was underway in the women’s fourth-floor rented flat. A dispute reportedly broke out with neighbours over the noise, which allegedly escalated into verbal racial abuse and intimidation.
Police sources stated that the women claimed they were subjected to racial slurs, threats, and harassment during the confrontation. The altercation reportedly began as a minor disagreement but quickly took an ugly turn, highlighting persistent concerns over racial discrimination faced by people from India’s Northeastern states in metropolitan cities.
Police Action and Investigation
Delhi Police confirmed that they have taken note of the complaint and are verifying the allegations. Officials said appropriate legal action would be initiated based on evidence and witness statements. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the sequence of events and identify those responsible.
Wider Concern Over Racial Discrimination
The incident has reignited discussions around racial bias and safety of Northeastern communities living in urban centres. Activists and community leaders have repeatedly urged authorities to ensure stricter enforcement of laws and greater public awareness to prevent such incidents.
The Meghalaya Chief Minister also called upon law-enforcement agencies and civil society to work together to ensure that every Indian citizen, irrespective of ethnicity or region, is treated with dignity and respect.
