Private college bus meets with an accident near Hallihole in Udupi district; prompt response averts a major tragedy
Kundapur: In a potentially tragic road accident, a college bus carrying students to a National Service Scheme (NSS) camp overturned in Kundapur, leaving several students with minor injuries, while a major mishap was narrowly avoided. The incident occurred near Shettipalu, close to Hallihole village in Udupi, police sources confirmed on Monday.
Accident Occurred While En Route to NSS Camp
According to preliminary information, the bus was transporting students from a private college to an NSS camp organised at Sulgodu School in Hallihole village. While passing through a narrow stretch near Shettipalu, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing the bus to overturn.
Bus Crashes Into Coconut Tree, Disaster Averted
Officials stated that after overturning, the bus rammed into a coconut tree, which prevented it from plunging further off the road. Authorities believe this impact played a crucial role in averting a major disaster, considering the number of students on board at the time of the accident.
Students Escape With Minor Injuries
All the students managed to escape from the damaged bus, sustaining only minor injuries. They were provided first aid at the scene and no serious casualties were reported. The front portion of the bus suffered significant damage, officials added.
No Police Complaint Registered So Far
Local police sources said that no formal complaint has been lodged in connection with the incident as of now. An initial assessment suggests driver error and loss of control as the primary cause, though further verification is underway.
“A major tragedy was avoided as the bus hit a coconut tree after overturning. All students are safe with only minor injuries,” a local police official said.
