A sudden medical emergency behind the wheel led to a shocking road accident in Kerala, leaving one life lost and raising concerns over driver health and passenger safety
Alappuzha (Kerala): A Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus rammed into a roadside shop after its driver reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest while driving in the Mavelikara area of Alappuzha district on Thursday morning, according to police officials.
The accident occurred at around 9:00 am, when the KSRTC bus was en route from Pathanamthitta to Mavelikara. Police said the driver, identified as Pradeep, suddenly collapsed at the wheel after suffering a cardiac arrest, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. The bus veered off its path and crashed into a shop located along the roadside.
Immediate Response and Casualties
Following the collision, locals and emergency responders rushed to the scene. The driver was immediately shifted to a private hospital for urgent medical attention. However, despite efforts by doctors, he was declared dead shortly after admission, police confirmed.
“The driver appears to have suffered a cardiac arrest while driving, which led to the accident. Further procedures are being carried out as per protocol,” a police official said.
Passengers and Property Damage
Officials stated that there were passengers onboard at the time of the incident. Fortunately, no serious injuries to passengers or bystanders have been reported so far, though the shop sustained damage due to the impact. Authorities are assessing the extent of property loss.
Ongoing Probe and Safety Concerns
Police have initiated an inquiry to document the sequence of events and are coordinating with KSRTC officials. The incident has once again brought attention to driver health monitoring, especially for those operating public transport vehicles over long hours.
KSRTC authorities are expected to review internal health screening procedures as part of standard safety measures. Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
