Fraudsters Use Photos With Celebrities to Build Credibility; Police Warn Public Against Responding to Unverified Profiles

Bengaluru: Cyber fraudsters have allegedly created a fake Facebook account impersonating Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, triggering concern among residents and prompting a formal cyber crime investigation.

Police sources confirmed that the fraudulent account used the Commissioner’s name, reportedly in Hindi, and featured photographs of him alongside celebrities and prominent personalities. Investigators suspect the profile was designed to gain public trust before approaching individuals with fraudulent requests, possibly to extract money under false pretences.

The incident once again underscores the rising threat of online impersonation and digital identity theft, particularly involving senior government officials.

Fake Profile Allegedly Built to Establish Credibility

Officials stated that the fake account was carefully curated to appear authentic, creating the impression that the Police Commissioner was personally active on social media. By projecting legitimacy, cyber criminals allegedly intended to engage unsuspecting users and exploit their trust.

Authorities have advised citizens to verify official and verified social media handles before accepting friend requests or responding to messages claiming to originate from senior officers.

“The public should exercise caution and avoid responding to messages or friend requests from unverified accounts claiming to represent senior officials,” a police officer said.

Pattern of Similar Impersonation Cases in Bengaluru

Police officials pointed out that this is not an isolated incident. In the past, fake social media accounts were also created in the names of senior officers, including Alok Kumar and Bhimashankar Guled.

These recurring cases suggest a pattern of organised cyber fraud aimed at exploiting public trust in law enforcement authorities. Investigators believe such profiles are often used to solicit money, personal information, or other sensitive data from unsuspecting citizens.

Case Registered, Probe Underway

A case has been formally registered at the cyber crime police station in Bengaluru. Technical teams are coordinating with Facebook to trace the origin of the fake account and identify those responsible.

Police reiterated that official communication from senior officers is conducted only through verified channels. Citizens have been urged to immediately report suspicious accounts to the cyber crime helpline or the nearest police station. The investigation is ongoing.
