Paralysed Husband Witnesses Brutal Murder; Accused Arrested for Targeting Victim to Clear ₹78 Lakh Debt
Bengaluru: In a chilling robbery-cum-murder that has sent shockwaves across the outskirts of Bengaluru, a 70-year-old woman was brutally killed inside her home in Nelamangala, while her paralysed husband watched helplessly from his wheelchair. Police cracked the case within hours, using CCTV tracking, technical surveillance, and swift field operations to arrest the prime accused.
The incident took place in the Pete Beedi area near Jayadeva Choultry under the jurisdiction of Nelamangala Town Police Station. The victim, identified as Shobha, was living with her husband Ranganath, who is paralysed. The elderly couple reportedly had no children and resided alone in the house.
According to police officials, the accused entered the residence after observing that only the elderly couple was present inside. Shobha was assaulted, struck on the head, and later had her throat slit, leading to her death on the spot. The brutal crime unfolded in front of her wheelchair-bound husband, who was unable to intervene.
Robbery Motive and Violent Execution
After killing the victim, the accused allegedly searched the house extensively for cash. When no significant money was found, he fled with her mangalsutra and bangles. Investigators revealed that the accused spent nearly one and a half hours inside the residence attempting to locate valuables.
Police teams, including a dog squad, immediately rushed to the crime scene and launched an intensive investigation. Neighbours were questioned, and CCTV cameras installed along nearby roads were scanned to trace suspicious movement in and around the locality.
CCTV Breakthrough Leads to Arrest
Through technical analysis and systematic CCTV tracking, officers identified the prime accused as Shivakumar (35), a wholesale shop owner. Investigators said he had allegedly targeted the elderly woman in a desperate attempt to clear a debt of ₹78 lakh.
According to police findings, Shivakumar entered the house, committed the murder, searched for money, and later escaped on his Activa scooter to avoid raising suspicion. In a startling twist, he reportedly remained near the crime scene during the initial stages of the investigation, posing as a concerned bystander.
However, police traced the registration number of his scooter through CCTV footage, which ultimately led them directly to him.
“The accused was identified through CCTV footage and technical analysis. Swift coordination among teams ensured his arrest within a short span,” a senior police officer said.
Special Team Formed Under SP’s Guidance
Under the supervision of Superintendent of Police M.V. Chandrakant, a special team was constituted to fast-track the probe. The coordinated operation resulted in the swift arrest of the accused.
Police have recovered the scooter allegedly used in the crime, the knife believed to be the murder weapon, and the accused’s mobile phone for further forensic examination.
A case has been registered at Nelamangala Town Police Station, and further investigation is underway to establish additional details, including whether the accused acted alone or had prior reconnaissance of the residence.
