Shivagange Hill Safety Railings Raise Serious Concerns for Devotees and Trekkers
Serious concerns have emerged over the deteriorating condition of safety railings at Shivagange Hill near Bengaluru after visitors reported heavily rusted and unstable iron bars along the steep trekking route. The issue has sparked demands for immediate repairs by the Muzrai Department, with devotees warning that negligence could lead to a major tragedy at one of Karnataka's most visited pilgrimage and trekking destinations.
Bengaluru: A major safety concern has surfaced at Shivagange Hill, one of Karnataka's most popular pilgrimage and trekking destinations, after iron safety railings installed along the steep climbing route were found to be severely rusted, loose and damaged, posing a serious risk to thousands of devotees and trekkers.
Located under the jurisdiction of Dabaspet Police Station in Nelamangala taluk, Shivagange Hill stands at an elevation of approximately 4,488 feet above sea level and attracts thousands of visitors from across India and abroad every year. Popularly known as the "Dakshina Kashi" (Kashi of the South), the hill is renowned for its religious significance, ancient temples and challenging trekking trail.
Shivagange Hill Safety Railings in Dangerous Condition
Visitors have alleged that several iron railings installed to support trekkers on the steep ascent have deteriorated significantly due to rust and lack of maintenance. The support structures holding the railings have reportedly loosened, creating the possibility of the barriers giving way under pressure.
Considering the narrow and steep sections of the trekking route, even a minor loss of balance could result in a fatal fall into deep gorges.
Several tourists recently recorded videos showing the damaged railings near the summit. The clips, which have since circulated widely on social media, show rusted bars shaking and partially detached from their supports, prompting fresh criticism of the authorities responsible for maintaining the hill.
"Even a slight loss of control here could cost someone their life. Small children and elderly devotees depend on these railings while climbing. Are officials waiting for a major tragedy before taking action?" several devotees questioned.
Thousands Visit Shivagange Hill Every Week
Situated about 56 kilometres from Bengaluru and around 30 kilometres from Tumakuru, Shivagange Hill is a preferred one-day destination for pilgrims, trekkers and adventure enthusiasts. The hill lies nearly 7 kilometres off National Highway 48 (Bengaluru-Tumakuru Highway), making it easily accessible by road.
After reaching the foothill, visitors undertake a trek of nearly 4 kilometres (round trip), which generally takes two to three hours to complete. While the lower sections of the trail are relatively easy, the final stretch becomes extremely steep, with inclines reaching nearly 70 percent, making properly maintained safety railings essential for climbers.
Shivagange Hill Remains a Major Pilgrimage Destination
Apart from its trekking appeal, Shivagange is considered one of Karnataka's most sacred pilgrimage centres. The hill derives its name and religious importance from its natural resemblance to a Shiva Linga and houses several ancient shrines.
Major attractions include the Sri Gangadhareshwara Temple, the sacred underground spring known as Patala Gange, and the iconic Nandi statue carved atop a steep rock formation. Historically, the hill is associated with the Hoysala dynasty, while a location known as Shanthala Drop is linked to Queen Shanthala. The hill was later fortified by Kempegowda during the 16th century.
Past Safety Incidents Highlight Need for Immediate Repairs
Although Shivagange Hill has not witnessed a single large-scale disaster in recent years, the destination has recorded isolated fatal accidents, trekking-related injuries, wildlife attacks and suicide incidents due to its difficult terrain and steep cliffs.
The deteriorating condition of the safety railings has therefore intensified concerns among regular visitors, who warn that continued negligence could significantly increase the risk of a fatal accident.
"The railings are the only support available in several steep sections of the climb. Immediate repairs are essential before another unfortunate incident occurs," local visitors said.
Devotees Seek Immediate Action from Muzrai Department
Devotees and trekkers have urged the Muzrai Department to immediately inspect the hill, replace all damaged iron railings and conduct a comprehensive safety audit before the condition worsens further.
Many have also demanded periodic maintenance, structural inspections and enhanced visitor safety measures considering the large number of pilgrims visiting Shivagange throughout the year.
With the monsoon season making rock surfaces increasingly slippery, visitors believe prompt intervention is necessary to prevent a potentially avoidable tragedy at one of Karnataka's most iconic religious and trekking destinations.
