Ramanagara Quarry Rock Collapse Leaves Seven Dead, Five Injured as Investigation Begins

A devastating rock collapse at a stone quarry in Madapatna village, Ramanagara district, claimed the lives of seven labourers and left five others critically injured on Wednesday morning. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, while questions are being raised over quarry safety practices, regulatory compliance, and accountability. The tragedy has triggered widespread concern over the working conditions of migrant labourers employed in the mining sector.

Ramanagara: At least seven labourers lost their lives and five others sustained serious injuries after a massive rock collapsed at a stone quarry near Madapatna village in Bengaluru South taluk of Ramanagara district during the early hours of Wednesday.

The accident occurred at around 5 am at the Cauvery Crusher quarry, where workers were engaged in quarry operations using a Hitachi excavator. According to preliminary information, a huge rock estimated to have fallen from a height of nearly 40 feet crashed onto workers operating below, leaving several trapped under the debris.

Officials fear the death toll could increase if additional victims are found during rescue operations.

Ramanagara Quarry Rock Collapse Claims Seven Lives

The Cauvery Crusher quarry employed around 10 to 15 migrant labourers from Bihar along with two to three local workers. At the time of the incident, several workers were carrying out excavation activities when the rock suddenly gave way.

Five seriously injured labourers were immediately shifted to R.R. Hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment. Hospital authorities are closely monitoring their condition.

"A massive rock suddenly fell on the workers below. The incident happened barely around 10 feet away from where I was operating the Hitachi machine," the excavator operator told TV9 after the incident.

The unexpected collapse created panic at the quarry site as rescue teams rushed to remove debris and search for survivors.

Authorities Probe Cause of Ramanagara Quarry Accident

Senior Geologist Krishnaveni stated that quarry operators had reportedly obtained permission for blasting activities. However, the exact reason behind the rock collapse remains unclear.

"Permission had been obtained for the blasting activity. The precise cause of the accident will be determined only after a detailed inspection of the quarry site," Senior Geologist Krishnaveni said.

Officials from the Department of Mines and Geology, along with local authorities, have initiated a comprehensive investigation to determine whether safety protocols were followed and whether any negligence contributed to the fatal accident.

Families of Victims Left Devastated in Ramanagara Quarry Rock Collapse

The victims were primarily migrant labourers who had travelled from Bihar in search of employment opportunities. According to local sources, many of them had been working at the quarry for nearly a year to support their families.

News of the tragedy has left family members devastated, with relatives arriving at the quarry site after learning about the incident. Emotional scenes unfolded as grieving families waited for official confirmation and recovery of the victims.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns regarding occupational safety standards at stone quarries and the vulnerability of migrant workers employed in hazardous industries.

MLA S.T. Somashekhar Demands Strict Action on Ramanagara Quarry Rock Collapse

Reacting to the tragedy, MLA S.T. Somashekhar demanded immediate legal action against those responsible for the incident.

"Information suggests that seven out of ten workers have lost their lives. I had earlier urged authorities to remain vigilant. A case should be registered against the local police and the Forest Department if lapses are found. Those responsible for this tragedy must be arrested immediately," the MLA said.

His remarks have intensified demands for a thorough inquiry into possible administrative failures and enforcement of quarry safety regulations.

Authorities continue rescue and investigation efforts as the district administration assesses the full extent of the tragedy and examines whether violations of mining and workplace safety norms contributed to one of the deadliest quarry accidents reported in the region this year.
