Heavy rainfall triggers a landslide on NH-75 in Shiradi Ghat, revives Jog Falls and raises the Dudhganga River, affecting connectivity in Belagavi district

Heavy rainfall continued across Karnataka on July 7, triggering a landslide on NH-75 in Shiradi Ghat, increasing water flow at Jog Falls and causing the Dudhganga River in Belagavi district to rise sharply. Authorities cleared debris on the highway, monitored landslide-prone areas and kept a close watch on flood-affected villages as rising river levels submerged several connecting bridges in Chikkodi taluk.

Bengaluru: Heavy rainfall continued across several parts of Karnataka on Tuesday, triggering a landslide on National Highway (NH) 75 in Shiradi Ghat, increasing water flow at Jog Falls and causing the Dudhganga River in Belagavi district to rise sharply. Authorities have intensified monitoring and precautionary measures in vulnerable areas as rain persists across the Malnad and border regions.

Shiradi Ghat Landslide on NH-75 Cleared Promptly

A landslide occurred near Kappalli on the Sakleshpur–Mangaluru stretch of National Highway 75 in Shiradi Ghat following continuous rainfall in Hassan district. Road maintenance teams immediately deployed earthmoving equipment to clear the debris and restore traffic movement.

The Hassan district administration has identified landslide-prone locations along Shiradi Ghat and stationed emergency teams to respond quickly to any soil or rock collapse. Officials said even minor landslides are being cleared immediately to ensure smooth movement of vehicles on the highway.

Jog Falls Attracts More Tourists After Heavy Rain

Continuous rainfall in the Malnad region has revived Jog Falls, located on the border of Shivamogga and Uttara Kannada districts. The increase in water flow has drawn a larger number of visitors to the tourist destination.

Tourists were seen gathering at designated viewpoints to witness the waterfalls and capture photographs. Authorities have advised visitors to follow safety guidelines while visiting the site during the monsoon season.

Dudhganga River Water Level Rises in Belagavi

Heavy rainfall in the Western Ghats region of Maharashtra has caused the Dudhganga River in Chikkodi taluk of Belagavi district to swell significantly. Officials said the river level increased by nearly 20 feet overnight, raising concerns among residents living near the river.

As many as 10 connecting bridges in the Chikkodi subdivision have gone underwater due to the rising water level. The bridge connecting Mallikawad and Dattawad villages has been completely submerged, disrupting road connectivity between the two villages.

Farmers cultivating land along the riverbanks have begun harvesting fodder and shifting livestock to safer locations as a precaution against possible flooding. Residents of riverside villages, including Mallikawad, fear that continued rainfall in Maharashtra could lead to further flooding and affect more settlements in the coming days.
