Jammu and Kashmir rain forecast predicts heavy showers, flash flood risk and weather disruptions across vulnerable regions through July 12

The Meteorological Department has forecast widespread light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms and isolated heavy showers across Jammu and Kashmir between July 7 and July 12. Authorities have also warned of flash floods, landslides and mudslides in vulnerable areas, urging residents to avoid nallas, streams and landslide-prone locations during the wet spell.

Srinagar: The Meteorological Department (MeT) has predicted a prolonged spell of light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms across Jammu and Kashmir from July 7 to July 12, while warning that isolated locations could experience heavy showers and brief periods of intense rainfall during the forecast period.

According to officials at the MeT Centre in Srinagar, the weather system is expected to influence both the Jammu and Kashmir divisions over the next six days, increasing the likelihood of heavy rainfall at select locations. The department has also issued precautionary advisories for vulnerable regions that are susceptible to weather-related hazards.

"Heavy rainfall and brief intense showers are likely at a few places during the forecast period, particularly during late night, early morning and afternoon hours."

Weather conditions are expected to remain active during July 11 and July 12, with one or two spells of rain and thundershowers likely across many parts of Jammu and Kashmir.

Flash Flood and Landslide Risk in Chenab Valley and Pir Panjal

Along with the rainfall forecast, the Meteorological Department has issued a weather advisory highlighting the possibility of heavy rainfall and intense showers during July 7-8 and again on July 11 at a few locations.

Authorities have cautioned that adverse weather conditions may increase the risk of flash floods, landslides and mudslides, particularly in vulnerable stretches of the Chenab Valley and the Pir Panjal range.

The advisory warns that sudden heavy rainfall may affect hilly terrain and drainage systems, requiring increased vigilance from local residents and travellers.

Public Advisory During Jammu and Kashmir Heavy Rainfall

The weather department has urged people living in vulnerable areas to remain cautious throughout the forecast period.

Residents have been advised to avoid visiting nallas, streams, riverbanks and landslide-prone locations, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. Authorities have also recommended monitoring official weather updates and exercising caution while travelling through mountainous regions where landslides or mudslides may occur.

The extended rainfall forecast is expected to keep weather conditions unstable across Jammu and Kashmir until July 12, with officials continuing to monitor the evolving weather system and issue updates as required.
