Bengaluru: Chennamma, wife of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, passed away on Saturday after suffering a cardiac arrest at Manipal Hospital on Old Airport Road in Bengaluru. She was 89.
She had been admitted to the hospital on the night of July 15 after developing age-related respiratory complications and chest congestion. Family members, including H.D. Deve Gowda and Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, had been visiting her in the intensive care unit (ICU) before her demise.
Chennamma Dies After Cardiac Arrest in Bengaluru
Hospital sources had earlier stated that Chennamma was receiving treatment for breathing complications, chest congestion and other age-related health conditions. Despite medical care, she suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away on Saturday.
Her death marks the loss of a member of one of Karnataka's most prominent political families.
"Chennamma passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment for age-related health complications," hospital sources said.
Chennamma's Role in the Deve Gowda Family
Although Chennamma never entered electoral politics or held public office, she remained a constant presence in the political journey of the Deve Gowda family.
She stood beside H.D. Deve Gowda throughout his public life, from his years in Karnataka politics to his tenure as the 11th Prime Minister of India.
She was also regarded as the matriarch of the Janata Dal (Secular) family, supporting generations of political leaders, including her sons H.D. Kumaraswamy, a former Karnataka Chief Minister and current Union Minister, and H.D. Revanna, a senior JD(S) leader.
Known for maintaining a low public profile, Chennamma remained closely connected to her rural roots while supporting her family through decades of public service.
