Bengaluru: In a significant political development following the formation of the new D.K. Shivakumar-led government in Karnataka, senior Congress leader U.T. Khader has resigned from the post of Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. The move comes as he is set to be inducted into the state cabinet as a minister.
Khader submitted his resignation letter to the Deputy Speaker at Lok Bhavan, shortly after being called by Chief Minister-designate D.K. Shivakumar to take oath as a minister in the new government.
The resignation marks a key transition in Karnataka’s legislative leadership structure as cabinet formation progresses in the state.
U.T. Khader Resigns as Assembly Speaker
U.T. Khader formally stepped down from his position as Assembly Speaker, submitting his resignation letter to the Deputy Speaker. The development confirms his exit from the constitutional post ahead of joining the new cabinet.
Sources indicate that Khader is likely to be sworn in as a minister in the upcoming oath-taking ceremony along with other members of the new government.
Meeting with Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot
Following his resignation, Khader met Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot and expressed gratitude for the cooperation extended during his tenure as Speaker.
He also formally informed the Governor about stepping down from the post, marking the completion of his responsibilities in the Assembly leadership role.
Khader previously served as Karnataka’s Health Minister and is expected to return to the cabinet with a key portfolio in the new government.
Khader Eyes Health or Housing Portfolio
Reacting to his ministerial induction, U.T. Khader stated that he had not demanded any specific portfolio but expressed interest in key departments.
“I have not demanded any portfolio. But I would like to get the Health or Housing portfolio. I will handle any responsibility given by the leaders,” Khader said.
He further added that he is prepared to take on any responsibility assigned by the party leadership and expressed readiness to even serve in higher administrative roles if required.
Supporters Celebrate Cabinet Entry
Following confirmation of his ministerial induction, supporters of U.T. Khader gathered at his residence near the golf course area in Bengaluru to celebrate the development.
Party workers and well-wishers extended greetings and expressed confidence that his inclusion in the cabinet would strengthen governance and administrative efficiency.
With the new government taking shape, Khader’s return to the cabinet is seen as a significant political appointment within Karnataka’s evolving leadership framework.
