KSAPS data reveals a sharp rise in active HIV cases, with young adults accounting for a growing share of infections across Karnataka
Bengaluru: Karnataka is witnessing a significant rise in HIV/AIDS cases, with official data showing a sharp increase in active infections over the past three years. Health authorities have expressed concern over the growing number of cases among young adults, particularly those between 18 and 35 years of age, as changing social behaviours and unsafe sexual practices continue to contribute to the spread of the virus.
According to figures released by the Karnataka State AIDS Prevention Society (KSAPS), active HIV cases in the state have increased substantially, highlighting an emerging public health concern that demands stronger awareness, prevention and testing efforts.
Karnataka HIV Cases Register Sharp Increase
Recent KSAPS statistics show a consistent rise in active HIV infections across Karnataka.
- 2023–2024: 44,581 active cases
- 2024–2025: 62,664 active cases
- 2025–2026: 66,606 active cases
The figures indicate a major increase within a short period, prompting health officials to intensify prevention and awareness campaigns.
Young Adults Most Affected by Rising HIV Infections
Data shows that the highest number of infections is being reported among individuals aged between 18 and 35 years.
Among the 18–25 age group:
- 2023–24: 3,732 cases
- 2024–25: 6,962 cases
- 2025–26: 6,283 cases
Among the 26–35 age group:
- 2023–24: 9,351 cases
- 2024–25: 14,555 cases
Health experts say this demographic remains particularly vulnerable due to increased social interactions, inadequate awareness regarding HIV prevention and engagement in high-risk sexual behaviours.
The report also notes that 417 new HIV cases have been recorded during the current year.
Unsafe Sexual Practices Remain a Key Concern
Public health experts emphasise that HIV transmission is linked to unsafe sexual practices rather than any specific sexual orientation.
Officials involved in prevention programs state that awareness campaigns promoting safe sexual behaviour are being conducted continuously across the state.
According to health authorities, HIV spreads more rapidly in networks where individuals engage in unprotected sexual activity, do not undergo regular testing and fail to seek timely treatment.
“We continue to promote awareness about safe sexual practices. HIV prevention depends on testing, protection and timely treatment,” health officials said.
Dating Apps and Other STIs Add to Public Health Challenges
Infectious disease specialists have also highlighted the role of dating applications and changing relationship patterns in increasing exposure to HIV when precautions are not followed.
Senior Bengaluru-based infectious disease expert Dr. Swati Rajagopal stated that easier access to partners through digital platforms can sometimes result in a higher incidence of unprotected sexual contact.
Experts further note that sexually transmitted infections such as syphilis and gonorrhoea can significantly increase the likelihood of HIV transmission if left untreated.
Government Expands HIV Awareness and Screening Initiatives
To address the rising numbers, the Karnataka government has intensified awareness and screening programs across colleges, hostels and corporate workplaces.
Authorities are encouraging citizens to use the government's "Break Free" mobile application to assess personal health risks and access HIV-related guidance.
In addition, the 1097 HIV/AIDS helpline continues to offer free information, counselling and support services.
Officials have confirmed that awareness drives and HIV screening camps will continue in corporate sectors over the coming months as part of efforts to improve early detection and reduce transmission.
Focus on Prevention and Early Treatment
Medical experts stress that HIV is a manageable chronic condition when detected early and treated appropriately. They emphasise that stigma, misinformation and delayed testing remain major barriers to controlling the disease.
Health authorities continue to urge people to undergo regular testing, practice safe sex and seek medical advice whenever necessary.
As Karnataka records a steady increase in active HIV cases, healthcare agencies are focusing on prevention, education and timely treatment to contain the spread of the virus and protect vulnerable populations.
