Police opened fire in self-defence, injuring the suspect below the knee before arresting him. More than 21 kg of cannabis was seized, and an investigation is underway to trace the supply network.
Chennai: A police operation to crack down on illegal cannabis trafficking in Chennai's suburban Vandalur area turned dramatic after officers allegedly opened fire on a suspect who attacked a head constable while attempting to flee. Police seized more than 21 kilograms of cannabis during the operation and arrested two accused, both of whom reportedly have criminal records.
The incident occurred in the Karasangal area of Otteri near Vandalur after police received specific intelligence about an alleged large-scale cannabis transaction taking place at a local cricket ground.
Chennai Police Ganja Bust Leads to Dramatic Chase
According to police, officers rushed to the location after receiving confidential information regarding the suspected drug deal. At the spot, police noticed two men standing with a bag under suspicious circumstances.
As officers approached them for questioning, both suspects allegedly attempted to flee while carrying the bag. Police immediately chased the duo and managed to apprehend one of them.
During the pursuit, the second suspect allegedly attacked Head Constable Anandaraj in an attempt to escape.
"Police said the suspect allegedly attacked the pursuing head constable before officers opened fire in self-defence to prevent his escape."
Chennai Police Open Fire After Suspect Allegedly Attacks Head Constable
According to officials, officers opened fire in self-defence after the suspect allegedly assaulted the police personnel and continued attempting to flee.
The bullet struck the suspect below the knee, causing him to fall to the ground. Police immediately secured the injured man and took him into custody.
Both the injured suspect and the second accused were shifted to Chromepet Government Hospital, where they received initial medical treatment.
21 Kg Cannabis Seized During Chennai Anti-Drug Operation
Following the arrests, police searched the bag carried by the accused and recovered approximately 21.6 kilograms of cannabis, packed into multiple packets.
The seized narcotics were confiscated as evidence.
Initial investigations identified the arrested men as Selvakumar and Kanagaraj, both residents of the Otteri area near Vandalur. Police said both accused have multiple criminal cases registered against them.
"Police recovered approximately 21.6 kilograms of cannabis from the suspects' bag during the operation."
Investigation Underway to Trace Drug Supply Network
The Otteri Police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation to determine the origin of the seized cannabis and identify those involved in the alleged drug supply chain.
Investigators are also attempting to identify the individuals who were expected to receive the narcotics at the location.
Officials said the seizure highlights ongoing efforts by Chennai Police to curb narcotics trafficking in suburban areas, particularly around Vandalur and neighbouring localities.
The recovery of over 21 kilograms of cannabis and the police firing during the operation have created considerable attention in the Karasangal area, with authorities intensifying efforts to dismantle drug distribution networks operating in the region.
