BNCC LED Street Light Project reaches 86% completion as new lighting plans target dark spots across Bengaluru
Bengaluru North City Corporation (BNCC) has completed 86% of its LED street light conversion project across multiple zones under a Public-Private Partnership model. The civic body has also initiated plans to install new street light poles and cable networks in poorly illuminated areas to improve road safety, energy efficiency, and public convenience across North Bengaluru.
Bengaluru: The Bengaluru North City Corporation (BNCC) has achieved significant progress in its citywide street lighting modernization initiative, with 86 percent of conventional street lights successfully converted into energy-efficient LED lighting systems. The project is being implemented under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model with government approval and aims to improve public safety while reducing energy consumption across the city.
The initiative is being carried out under the direction of BNCC Commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar and forms a key component of the corporation's efforts to strengthen urban infrastructure and smart city services.
BNCC LED Street Light Project Reaches Major Milestone
According to official information released by the corporation, LED street light installation has been substantially completed in Yelahanka, Byatarayanapura, Hebbal, Pulakeshinagar, Sarvagnanagar, five wards of Dasarahalli, and three wards of Rajarajeshwari Nagar.
The remaining installation work is currently underway and is expected to be completed in phases. Simultaneously, the installation of Centralized Control and Monitoring System (CCMS) equipment is also progressing to enable smart monitoring and efficient management of street lighting infrastructure.
"The LED conversion project is aimed at ensuring energy conservation, better illumination and enhanced public safety across Bengaluru North City Corporation limits."
Officials stated that until the Commercial Operation Date (COD) is officially declared, maintenance responsibilities for all street lights will continue to remain with the contractor executing the project.
More Than 68,000 LED Street Lights Installed Across BNCC
The corporation's data shows that BNCC currently manages a total of 1,24,325 street lights within its jurisdiction.
The street lighting network includes:
- 59,693 existing LED street lights
- 64,632 conventional street lights
- 14,576 vacant poles
As part of the ongoing modernization programme, a total of 68,907 LED street lights have already been installed.
The remaining conventional street lights are being replaced on priority, while smart CCMS switch installations are simultaneously being integrated into the network.
New LED Street Lights Planned For Dark Spots In Bengaluru
In addition to replacing conventional lighting systems, BNCC has launched plans to improve illumination in poorly lit areas identified through public complaints and field inspections.
The civic body has prepared proposals for the installation of additional street light poles, underground electrical cable networks and Aerial Bunched (AB) cables in dark spots across several assembly constituencies.
The initiative is expected to address long-standing concerns related to road visibility, pedestrian safety and public security in under-illuminated areas.
Infrastructure Expansion In Yelahanka And Byatarayanapura
For Yelahanka and Byatarayanapura Assembly constituencies, BNCC has proposed:
- Installation of approximately 1,313 new street light poles
- Development of 63.63 kilometres of cable network
- Estimated project cost of ₹550 lakh
Officials believe the project will significantly strengthen lighting infrastructure in rapidly developing residential and commercial zones.
Street Lighting Projects Approved For Hebbal And Pulakeshinagar
Similarly, separate infrastructure proposals have been prepared for Hebbal, Pulakeshinagar and Sarvagnanagar Assembly constituencies.
The proposal includes:
- Installation of 1,601 new street light poles
- Development of 46.65 kilometres of cable network
- Estimated project cost of ₹316 lakh
Combined funding has been earmarked for approximately 1,942 new street light poles and 92.50 kilometres of electrical cable infrastructure across key constituencies under BNCC limits.
The tender process for these projects has already been completed, and the proposals are currently awaiting final administrative approval.
"The objective is to ensure adequate lighting coverage across all areas, improve public safety and achieve long-term energy savings through modern LED technology."
Public Safety And Energy Conservation: Key Focus Areas
BNCC officials emphasised that the LED street lighting programme is designed not only to reduce electricity consumption but also to create safer roads, residential neighbourhoods and public spaces.
The adoption of energy-efficient lighting technology is expected to significantly lower maintenance costs while improving service reliability and illumination standards.
With the remaining installations progressing and new projects awaiting approval, the corporation aims to complete the balance works at the earliest and strengthen Bengaluru's urban infrastructure through smart and sustainable lighting solutions.
