Assistant Sub-Inspector killed while travelling to duty near Majitha as opposition questions Punjab law and order situation

Amritsar: A police officer was shot dead by unidentified attackers near Amritsar during the early hours of Sunday, triggering a major political confrontation over the law and order situation in Punjab.

The deceased officer has been identified as Joga Singh, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) with the Punjab Police. According to police officials, the officer was travelling on his scooter to report for duty when he was allegedly attacked and shot by unidentified assailants near Majitha.

Authorities confirmed that the officer’s body was recovered with gunshot injuries.

Suhail Mir stated that investigators are probing the incident from multiple angles, including possible personal rivalry, targeted attack and road rage.

ASI Joga Singh Shot Dead While Going to Duty

Police sources said the incident took place around 6 AM when bike-borne attackers allegedly intercepted and opened fire at the officer while he was on the road.

The sudden attack created panic in the area, with senior police officials rushing to the scene soon after receiving information.

Investigators have launched a detailed probe and are examining CCTV footage, local witness accounts and forensic evidence to identify the attackers and determine the motive behind the killing.

“The incident is being investigated from all possible angles,” police officials stated.

No arrests had been officially announced at the time of reporting.

Akali Dal Attacks Bhagwant Mann Over Punjab Law and Order

Following the killing, senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia launched a sharp attack on Bhagwant Mann and the Punjab Police administration.

Majithia described the incident as a serious failure of law enforcement in the sensitive Indo-Pak border state and criticised the state government over security concerns.

In a post shared on X, the Akali Dal leader stated that neither police stations nor police personnel themselves appeared safe anymore in Punjab.

He also criticised the continued appointment of Gaurav Yadav in an acting capacity as Director General of Police.

“Punjab cannot afford politically influenced policing while extortion, targeted killings and fear continue to grow,” Majithia stated.

The opposition leader further linked the latest incident to previous security threats reported in the Amritsar region, including grenade attacks targeting police infrastructure earlier this year.

Security Concerns Rise in Border State Punjab

The killing has intensified political debate over policing, organised crime and security threats in Punjab, particularly in districts located close to the Indo-Pak border.

Authorities are now expected to intensify search operations and surveillance measures in the region as investigations continue.

The incident has also reignited discussions over attacks on police personnel and the broader law and order situation in the state.

Police officials stated that further details regarding the attackers and motive are expected to emerge after the investigation progresses.
