Jailer suffers a hand fracture after inmates linked to the ration rice smuggling case allegedly attack him inside the Jamkhandi prison

Bagalkot: A shocking incident of violence inside the Jamkhandi outer prison in Karnataka’s Bagalkot district has raised serious concerns over jail security after a jailer was allegedly assaulted by inmates while attempting to stop a violent clash inside the prison premises.

Jailer V.D. Kumbara sustained severe injuries, including a fracture to his left hand, after he was reportedly attacked by a group of prisoners during a late-evening commotion inside the jail. The injured officer was immediately shifted to a private hospital in Jamkhandi, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

The incident has triggered concern among prison authorities and law enforcement officials over the growing aggression among inmates lodged in district prisons.

Prison Fight Escalated Into Assault on Jailer

According to police sources, the accused inmates were allegedly involved in an illegal ration rice transportation case registered earlier by the Mahalingapur Police. The group, led by accused Zakir Hussain Makandar, had been lodged at the Jamkhandi outer prison following their arrest.

Officials said a heated altercation reportedly broke out between members of the same gang inside the prison on Sunday evening. As tensions escalated, Jailer V.D. Kumbara intervened to stop the clash and restore order within the jail premises.

However, the situation turned violent when the inmates allegedly attacked the jailer instead of calming down.

“The jailer was assaulted while attempting to separate the fighting inmates and bring the situation under control,” police sources said.

Gang of Prisoners Booked for Attack

The accused involved in the alleged assault have been identified as Zakir Hussain Makandar, Fayaz Makandar, Ashok Naikodi and Arafat Talikoti. Authorities stated that the prisoners allegedly attacked the jailer as a group, resulting in serious injuries.

Following the assault, prison staff rushed the injured officer to a nearby private hospital for emergency treatment. Doctors reportedly confirmed a fracture in his left hand.

A criminal case has now been registered at the Jamkhandi Rural Police Station and an investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events inside the prison.

Security Concerns Rise Inside Karnataka Prisons

The violent episode has once again highlighted concerns regarding prison discipline and the safety of jail officials handling high-risk inmates in Karnataka prisons. Authorities are reportedly reviewing internal security arrangements and inmate monitoring procedures following the incident.

Police officials are also expected to question prison staff and inmates as part of the ongoing investigation.
