AI-powered muzzle biometric identification to replace ear tags for livestock tracking in Karnataka
Bengaluru: In a first-of-its-kind initiative in India, the Karnataka government is set to introduce a unique digital identity system for livestock using muzzle biometrics technology, aiming to revolutionise cattle tracking, health monitoring, insurance verification, and welfare administration across the state.
The advanced system, designed on the lines of Aadhaar-style digital identification, will use barcode-enabled muzzle biometric records of cattle instead of traditional ear tags. The initiative is expected to improve transparency, reduce fraud in livestock-related schemes, and strengthen digital governance in the animal husbandry sector.
The Karnataka government believes the project will become a landmark transformation in livestock management and rural digital infrastructure.
Karnataka Digital Cattle Identification System
Under the new system, every animal will receive a unique digital identity linked to its muzzle pattern, which officials say is as unique as human fingerprints. Farmers will be able to access vaccination records, health reports, insurance information, and compensation-related details through a centralized digital platform.
The barcode-based digital identity will function similarly to an Aadhaar card for cattle, making it easier for authorities to verify livestock ownership and monitor welfare schemes more efficiently.
Officials confirmed that the system will gradually replace the older practice of attaching physical ear tags to cattle.
“Just like fingerprints in humans, muzzle patterns in animals are unique. The technology enables precise identification and improves transparency,” officials explained.
AI-Based Livestock Tracking In Karnataka
According to Pankaj Kumar Pandey, Principal Secretary of the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (e-Governance), the project has been developed using artificial intelligence and biometric verification technology.
The initiative will also help authorities prevent fraud linked to livestock insurance, subsidy claims, and compensation schemes. Officials believe digital identification can significantly reduce duplication and manipulation in animal welfare records.
Farmers are expected to receive SMS alerts regarding vaccination schedules, treatment reminders, and government service updates through the system.
India First Muzzle Biometric Aadhaar For Cattle
The government plans to allow farmers to upload photographs and records of their livestock directly into the platform in future phases of the project. Authorities are also exploring AI-based health scanning using muzzle photographs, which may assist in faster disease detection and veterinary assessment.
Newborn calves can also be digitally registered under the upcoming system, helping create lifelong livestock records from birth.
The initiative is expected to enhance livestock authentication, digital healthcare monitoring, and cattle-related administrative services across Karnataka while setting a national benchmark for technology-driven animal husbandry governance.
