High-speed rail corridor via Nallamala forests and Somasila moves ahead with five proposed stations in Telangana

Hyderabad: The ambitious Hyderabad–Bengaluru high-speed rail corridor project is rapidly moving toward the next stage, with the preliminary alignment survey nearing completion. The prestigious bullet train project, proposed by the Centre as part of India’s expanding high-speed rail network, is expected to reduce travel time between Hyderabad and Bengaluru to just over two hours.

According to the latest developments, the preliminary route finalized by the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited will begin from Kokapet in Hyderabad and pass through scenic regions including Shamshabad, Mannanur, Somasila, and stretches near the Nallamala forest area before connecting toward Karnataka via Andhra Pradesh.

The corridor is among the three major high-speed rail projects announced by the central government and is being viewed as a transformative infrastructure initiative for southern India.

Hyderabad Bengaluru Bullet Train Route Finalisation Underway

Initially, officials had considered routing the corridor through Mahabubnagar, Wanaparthy Road, and Kurnool. However, the Telangana government reportedly suggested an alternative alignment through regions lacking strong railway connectivity.

Following discussions with state authorities, the Centre reportedly preferred the Shamshabad–Fourth City–Mannanur–Srisailam alignment. The proposed track is expected to pass through Somasila before connecting with Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh.

Officials stated that portions of the route fall within sensitive forest zones, including areas connected to tiger reserve regions near Nallamala forests. Since parts of the alignment also involve ghat road stretches between Mannanur and Srisailam, surveys are being designed carefully to comply with environmental clearance requirements.

After completion of the preliminary survey, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) is expected to be prepared.

Five Bullet Train Stations Planned In Telangana

The proposed Hyderabad–Bengaluru bullet train corridor is expected to span approximately 607 kilometers, with nearly 205 kilometers falling within Telangana.

Authorities have proposed five high-speed rail stations in Telangana, including:

  1. Shamshabad
  2. Bharat Future City
  3. Amangallu
  4. Mannanur
  5. Somasila

Officials are also evaluating multiple alignment options between Kokapet and Shamshabad, including routes via the Outer Ring Road and alternative alignments outside the ORR limits.

The project is being treated as a major infrastructure priority under Telangana’s long-term development vision.

Ashwini Vaishnaw Highlights Impact On Air Travel

Ashwini Vaishnaw recently shared key updates regarding the project during a conference in Delhi. According to the minister, the proposed bullet train is expected to operate at speeds between 320 and 350 kilometres per hour.

“If city-centre bullet train connectivity becomes available, most passengers may prefer rail over air travel on this route,” the Railway Minister stated.

Officials estimate that the bullet train could reduce Hyderabad-to-Bengaluru travel time to nearly 2 hours and 8 minutes, significantly lower than current travel durations involving airport transit and security procedures.

The trains proposed for the corridor are expected to be indigenous Bharat Bullet Train Sets manufactured by BEML in Bengaluru.

Telangana Government Speeds Up Land Acquisition Process

The Telangana government has reportedly included the project as a major component of its Telangana Rising 2047 vision initiative.

Officials estimate that around 123 kilometres of land may be required within Telangana for the corridor development. High-level review meetings involving the Chief Secretary, GMR Group, Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority, and railway officials are underway to accelerate land acquisition and project execution.

The project is expected to significantly improve connectivity, reduce travel time, and reshape transportation patterns between two of South India’s largest metropolitan cities.
