Shimla: At least eight people were killed in a devastating road accident in Himachal Pradesh's Chamba district after a tourist vehicle lost control and plunged nearly 500 metres into a deep gorge on the Bairagarh Sach Pass Killar route. Authorities fear that some of the victims may be tourists from Bengaluru, although official identification is still underway.
The tragic incident occurred in the Churah subdivision of Chamba district as the vehicle was reportedly heading towards the snow-covered Sach Pass region, a popular tourist destination known for its breathtaking yet challenging mountain terrain.
Chamba Road Accident Claims Eight Lives
According to preliminary information, the vehicle was carrying a group of tourists, including families vacationing in the region. Officials said eight occupants died on the spot after the vehicle crashed into the gorge, highlighting the severity of the accident.
The impact of the fall completely wrecked the vehicle, leaving rescue personnel with a difficult task in reaching the accident site and recovering victims.
Bengaluru Tourists Feared Among Victims
Initial reports suggest that a tourist family from Bengaluru had hired the taxi for sightseeing in Dalhousie. The family was reportedly travelling along with another tourist family staying in the same area, and together they had planned a trip to the snow-covered stretches of Sach Pass.
Authorities said a total of nine people, including the driver, were believed to be travelling in the vehicle at the time of the accident. The passengers reportedly included two children.
Officials are currently verifying the identities of the victims, and confirmation regarding the Bengaluru tourists is awaited.
Rescue Operations Face Major Challenges
The accident site is located in a remote mountainous region with steep slopes and difficult terrain, making rescue operations extremely challenging. Emergency teams faced significant obstacles in accessing the wreckage due to the depth of the gorge and rugged landscape.
Police personnel, local administration officials and rescue teams rushed to the spot soon after receiving information about the crash.
Investigation into the Cause of the Accident Begins
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. While initial reports indicate that the driver may have lost control of the vehicle, officials are examining all possible factors, including road conditions and visibility in the mountainous region.
Chamba Superintendent of Police Vijay Kumar Saklani confirmed the accident and stated that rescue teams had been deployed immediately after the incident was reported.
Mountain Road Safety Under Spotlight
The tragedy has once again brought attention to the risks associated with travel through high-altitude mountain routes in Himachal Pradesh. Roads leading to destinations such as Sach Pass are known for their sharp turns, narrow stretches and steep drops, requiring extreme caution from drivers and tourists alike.
Authorities are expected to release further details after the identification process is completed and the investigation progresses.
