Police investigation reveals customers were allegedly served beef as mutton at a Bengaluru restaurant following multiple consumer complaints

Bengaluru: Two restaurant owners in Bengaluru have been arrested after an investigation allegedly revealed that customers were being served beef while it was marketed and sold as mutton dishes. The case came to light following repeated complaints from consumers who suspected that the meat being served at a popular restaurant in the city was not mutton as advertised.

According to police officials, the accused have been identified as Jiju Alexander of Byrathi village and Shibu K.B. of Tippanna Layout. Both are natives of Kerala and were residing in a rented house in Bengaluru. The duo reportedly owns and operates Isiri Hub Kayaloram Restaurant located in Bommanahalli.

The arrest followed several complaints from customers who alleged that the restaurant was misleading diners by serving beef under the label of mutton dishes. Authorities stated that the restaurant’s menu card did not contain any mention of beef. However, multiple patrons claimed that the meat served after ordering mutton appeared suspicious and raised concerns about its authenticity.

Acting on these complaints, police launched a discreet investigation to verify the allegations. A police officer dressed in civilian clothing visited the restaurant, posing as a customer and ordered mutton dishes. Samples purchased during the operation were subsequently examined and reportedly confirmed to be beef rather than mutton.
“The investigation was initiated after repeated complaints from customers. Verification of the food samples allegedly confirmed that the meat served as mutton was actually beef,” a police official said.
Restaurant Owners Arrested in Bengaluru
Following the findings, police arrested both restaurant owners and registered a case under the provisions of the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020. The accused were later produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody before being shifted to a central prison.
Law enforcement authorities stated that the case is being treated seriously due to the alleged deception of consumers and possible violations of state laws governing cattle preservation and meat trade regulations.

Investigators have also revealed that a third business partner, identified as Abhilash, is currently absconding. Police teams have launched a search operation to trace and apprehend him. Officials indicated that further investigation is underway to determine the full extent of the alleged operation, including sourcing, distribution, and potential regulatory violations.

The incident has sparked fresh discussions regarding food labelling transparency, consumer rights, and compliance with food safety regulations in Bengaluru's restaurant industry. Authorities have urged consumers to report any suspected cases of food misrepresentation to ensure strict enforcement of food standards and public trust.

The case continues to remain under investigation, with officials expected to conduct additional inquiries into the restaurant’s operations and business records.
