A woman alleges premium mangoes sold as organic turned tasteless inside, raising concerns over chemically ripened fruits in India

NewsFlash Desk: A viral post on social media platform X has reignited concerns over chemically ripened mangoes after a woman alleged that she was sold “chemical-free” mangoes at premium prices, only to discover that the fruits were white and tasteless from the inside despite appearing perfectly ripe externally.

The post, shared by X user Nalini Unagar, has triggered widespread debate online about food safety, artificial ripening practices and misleading claims made by fruit sellers during the ongoing mango season.

According to the viral post, the woman purchased 10 kilograms of mangoes for Rs 1,800 after the seller reportedly assured her that the fruits were completely chemical-free and sourced directly from farms.

However, five days later, when the mangoes appeared fully ripe and orange from outside, she allegedly found that almost all the fruits were pale white and lacked taste when cut open.

“Outside they looked beautiful, inside they were garbage,” the user wrote in her viral X post.

The woman further claimed that when she returned to the seller and questioned him indirectly about the quality guarantee, he immediately refunded the entire amount without checking the fruits or arguing, which increased her suspicion that the mangoes may have been chemically treated.

Chemically Ripened Mangoes Concern Returns During Mango Season

The incident has once again highlighted recurring concerns surrounding artificial fruit ripening practices in Indian markets, especially during peak mango season when demand for premium varieties surges sharply.

Many consumers online reacted strongly to the post, claiming they had faced similar experiences where mangoes appeared naturally ripe from outside but remained raw, rubbery or tasteless internally.

Social media users also raised concerns over the alleged misuse of terms such as “organic”, “farm fresh” and “chemical-free” by vendors to justify higher prices and attract health-conscious buyers.

The viral post has sparked discussions around the use of chemical ripening agents such as calcium carbide and other artificial methods allegedly used to accelerate fruit ripening for faster market sales.

Food Safety Experts Warn Consumers To Stay Alert

Food safety experts have repeatedly warned consumers against purchasing unnaturally bright or uniformly coloured mangoes, as artificially ripened fruits may sometimes develop external colour without proper internal ripening.

Experts generally advise buyers to check for natural aroma, uneven skin texture and authentic sweetness instead of relying solely on appearance.

Consumer rights activists have also called for stricter inspections and stronger action against vendors making false claims about organic or chemical-free produce without certification.

“People are paying premium prices expecting safe and healthy food. Misleading claims damage consumer trust,” several users commented while reacting to the viral post.

The post continues to gain traction across social media platforms as users share their own experiences with allegedly chemically ripened fruits sold at inflated prices.
