Heavy evening rain floods roads, shuts underpasses and triggers massive traffic congestion across Bengaluru
Bengaluru: Heavy rain lashed Bengaluru on Thursday evening, throwing normal life out of gear and causing severe traffic disruptions across several parts of the city. Roads were flooded, underpasses submerged, and commuters faced long delays as intense rainfall hit the Silicon City at the beginning of the weekend.
The sudden downpour affected both central and suburban areas of Bengaluru, leaving office-goers, motorists, and two-wheeler riders stranded amid waterlogged roads and slow-moving traffic.
Authorities were forced to close several underpasses as a precautionary measure after rainwater accumulated rapidly in low-lying areas.
Heavy Rain Hits Major Areas Across Bengaluru
Dark clouds had covered Bengaluru since the evening before heavy rain intensified across multiple regions of the city.
Areas including Majestic, Corporation Circle, KR Market, UB City, Richmond Circle, Shivananda Circle, Jayanagar, and Malleswaram witnessed intense rainfall leading to severe congestion on key roads.
Several northern and western Bengaluru localities, such as Yelahanka, Hebbal, RT Nagar, Sahakaranagar, Vidyaranyapura, Yeshwanthpur, Mahalakshmi Layout, Rajajinagar, Vijayanagar, Nayandahalli, Banashankari, Koramangala, Shantinagar, Town Hall, Magadi Road, and Dasarahalli, also experienced heavy showers.
The rain coincided with peak evening hours, worsening the situation for thousands of commuters heading home after work ahead of the weekend.
Waterlogged Underpasses Disrupt Bengaluru Traffic
Multiple low-lying stretches and underpasses across Bengaluru were flooded due to continuous rainfall, severely affecting vehicle movement.
At the Shivananda Circle railway underpass, a car became stranded after water levels rose significantly. The driver reportedly struggled for a long time to move the vehicle out of the flooded stretch.
Several roads witnessed nearly two feet of stagnant water, forcing motorists to slow down and creating long traffic snarls.
In another incident highlighting the impact of the rain, a delivery executive’s bike reportedly stopped functioning after entering a heavily waterlogged road. The rider was seen struggling to restart the vehicle amid the downpour.
Office-Goers and Two-Wheeler Riders Face Difficulties
The heavy rain caused major inconvenience to office employees, daily commuters, and two-wheeler riders travelling across the city during evening rush hour.
Many residents were forced to take shelter near metro stations, roadside structures, and commercial complexes as rain continued to pour heavily.
Traffic police personnel and civic authorities were deployed in several locations to regulate vehicle movement and prevent accidents in flooded stretches.
The latest spell of heavy rainfall has once again exposed Bengaluru’s recurring urban flooding and drainage challenges during intense monsoon showers.
Bengaluru Rainfall Raises Concerns Over Civic Preparedness
Frequent flooding of roads and underpasses during heavy rain has remained a persistent concern for Bengaluru residents over the past several years.
Citizens have once again raised questions over stormwater drainage management, infrastructure preparedness, and the city’s ability to handle sudden heavy rainfall despite repeated civic measures announced by authorities.
Weather officials are expected to continue monitoring rainfall activity in Bengaluru as more showers are predicted in parts of Karnataka over the coming days.
