Bengaluru Indira Canteen Staff Face Starvation Due to Two-Month Salary Delay

Bengaluru: The backbone of Karnataka’s flagship subsidised meal program is on the verge of collapse as Indira Canteen workers report a dire financial crisis. Hundreds of employees responsible for the daily operations of these kitchens are struggling to survive following a total halt in salary disbursements. The workers, who perform essential duties such as cooking, vegetable cleaning, and general maintenance, have reached a breaking point as their pleas for basic compensation remain unanswered.

Substandard Wages Create Severe Economic Hardship
Staff members at the canteens are currently operating on a meager salary of 7,000 per month, an amount they claim is insufficient to cover basic living expenses in a city like Bengaluru. Despite the grueling nature of the work and the rising cost of essential commodities, these workers have seen no significant wage revision. The current pay structure has left many families unable to manage daily household expenses, pushing them deeper into a cycle of debt and poverty.

Two Month Payment Backlog Cripples Worker Households
The situation has escalated from poor pay to a total lack of income, as salaries have now remained unpaid for more than two months. Workers have lamented their inability to pay critical utility bills, including electricity and water, leading to the threat of service disconnections at their homes. The delay has caused widespread distress among the auxiliary staff, who primarily belong to economically vulnerable backgrounds and rely entirely on these monthly stipends for their sustenance.

"We are the ones feeding the city's poor, yet we cannot afford to feed our own children. Paying 7,000 is already a struggle, but not paying us at all for months is unbearable." — Anonymous Canteen Worker.

Urgent Appeal for Timely Salary Disbursement The primary demand of the protesting workers is the immediate release of all pending arrears and a guaranteed system for timely payments in the future. They have appealed to the municipal authorities and the state government to intervene and streamline the fund allocation process. Without immediate financial relief, the workers warn that the operational efficiency of the Indira Canteens, which serve thousands of citizens daily, could be severely compromised.
