Police register a case against the Chennai-based contractor after an investigation reveals debris piled near the collapsed wall

Bengaluru: A fresh FIR has been registered in connection with the deadly compound wall collapse at Bowring and Lady Curzon Medical College and Research Institute that claimed seven lives during heavy rain in Bengaluru.

The case has been filed at the Commercial Street Police Station against Chennai-based contractor ASR Traders following a complaint lodged by Executive Engineer Chandru.

Officials investigating the tragedy have now revealed crucial details indicating that excessive construction debris and waste material dumped beside the compound wall may have directly contributed to the collapse.

Bowring Hospital Wall Collapse Linked to Construction Waste

According to officials, ASR Traders had secured the construction contract related to Bowring and Lady Curzon Medical College infrastructure works.

Investigators stated that demolition debris and construction waste generated at the site were allegedly not cleared as per mandated safety regulations.

Instead, a large quantity of waste material was reportedly piled adjacent to the compound wall, increasing pressure on the structure.

Authorities suspect that the weakened wall failed to withstand the combined impact of heavy rainfall, strong winds and the excessive load from accumulated debris.

The collapse led to the deaths of seven people, including street vendors and pedestrians who were present near the hospital premises during the storm.

“The wall collapsed after failing to bear the pressure caused by debris accumulation and heavy rain,” officials stated during the investigation.

Contractor Failed to Respond to Government Notice

Officials confirmed that government authorities had earlier issued a notice to ASR Traders seeking clarification regarding safety violations and the alleged failure to remove construction waste from the site.

Executive Engineer Chandru reportedly directed the contractor company to submit a written response before May 18.

However, authorities stated that the company failed to respond to the notice despite repeated communication through official email channels.

Following the lack of response, Chandru approached the Commercial Street police station, after which police formally registered the FIR and launched further investigation.

Seven Killed in Bengaluru Rain Tragedy

The tragic incident occurred on April 29 when intense rain, hailstorms and strong winds lashed Bengaluru.

A massive compound wall near the emergency department of Bowring Hospital suddenly collapsed during the severe weather conditions.

Seven people, including five roadside vendors and two pedestrians, lost their lives in the incident, while several others sustained injuries and were admitted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The tragedy triggered widespread outrage and raised serious concerns regarding construction safety, civic negligence and infrastructure monitoring during ongoing development projects in Bengaluru.

Police Investigation Intensifies

Police officials stated that further investigation is underway to determine possible negligence, safety violations and accountability in the deadly collapse.

Authorities are also expected to examine whether additional contractors, engineers or officials may have violated construction and public safety regulations.

The case continues to attract major public attention as families of the victims seek accountability over one of Bengaluru’s deadliest rain-related infrastructure disasters in recent years.
