22-year-old from Vijayapura dies after allegedly ignoring anti-rabies treatment following rabid dog bite in Bagalkot district
Bagalkot: A tragic rabies-related death in Karnataka’s Bagalkot district has sparked serious public health concerns after a 22-year-old man allegedly died due to negligence in taking timely anti-rabies vaccination following a dog bite.
The deceased has been identified as Pradeep Chandrashekar Halerolli, a resident of Golasangi village in Nidagundi taluk of Vijayapura district.
Health officials stated that the young man was bitten by a suspected rabid dog nearly two months ago but allegedly failed to seek immediate medical treatment or vaccination, resulting in fatal complications after the rabies infection spread through his body.
Rabid Dog Bite During Village Fair Turns Fatal
According to sources, Pradeep had attended the Mannikeri Chandradevi Jatre held in Mannikeri village of Bilagi taluk in March when the incident occurred.
During the event, he was reportedly bitten by a rabid dog. However, officials said he did not take the injury seriously and allegedly avoided hospital treatment and anti-rabies vaccination despite the serious risk associated with infected dog bites.
Medical experts repeatedly warn that rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms begin appearing if preventive treatment is not administered immediately after exposure.
“Rabies can be completely prevented through timely vaccination after a dog bite, but once symptoms appear, survival chances become extremely low,” health officials warned.
Rabies Symptoms Appeared Nearly Two Months After Dog Bite
Sources stated that Pradeep began showing symptoms associated with rabies nearly two months after the dog bite incident. About a week ago, his health reportedly deteriorated rapidly, forcing family members to rush him to a government primary health centre in Nidagundi.
After receiving initial treatment, he was later referred to a private hospital in Kerudi, Bagalkot, as his condition worsened.
Officials said the patient was eventually shifted to the district hospital in Bagalkot on May 25. However, by that stage, the rabies virus had reportedly spread extensively throughout his body.
Despite medical efforts, Pradeep died late at night after treatment failed.
Health Department Issues Rabies Awareness Warning
The incident has triggered renewed concern among health authorities regarding awareness about rabies prevention and immediate treatment after dog bites.
Medical experts emphasized that anyone bitten by a dog, especially a suspected rabid animal, must immediately wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water and seek anti-rabies vaccination without delay.
Officials warned that negligence or delay in taking vaccination can prove fatal, as rabies attacks the nervous system and becomes almost impossible to treat after symptoms appear.
The Health Department has been conducting awareness campaigns across Karnataka regarding dog bite treatment and rabies prevention. Authorities urged the public not to ignore even minor animal bites and to complete the full vaccination schedule prescribed by doctors.
Rabies Cases Highlight Growing Public Health Challenge
The death has once again highlighted the growing concern surrounding stray dog attacks and rabies awareness in rural regions.
Health experts say lack of awareness, delayed treatment, and misconceptions about dog bites continue to contribute to preventable rabies deaths across India.
Authorities have appealed to the public to immediately report suspected rabid animals and seek emergency medical care after any dog bite incident.
