A West Indies Championship game was stopped and declared a draw after unsafe pitch conditions caused a ball to rise sharply and strike a batter’s helmet
NewsFlash Desk: At Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, a dramatic West Indies Championship match was abandoned after umpires ruled the pitch dangerous and unfit for play following a frightening on-field incident.
The match between the Leeward Islands and Trinidad and Tobago was halted after an unexpectedly rising delivery struck a batter on the helmet.
Batter Hurt by Sudden Bounce
Leeward Islands batter Jeremiah Louis was at the crease when pacer Jayden Seales delivered a ball that reared sharply off the surface.
The delivery hit Louis on the helmet, and he immediately went down on the ground. Reports said the helmet was damaged in the impact.
He later walked off the field and was taken for medical evaluation. Initial updates indicated he was stable.
“Player safety became the top priority after the incident.”
Umpires Stop Play Immediately
Following the blow, on-field umpires assessed the surface and decided that continuing the game would be unsafe.
The match was subsequently called off and officially recorded as a draw.
Board Statement Released
Cricket West Indies reportedly confirmed that dangerous pitch conditions at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium forced the cancellation.
Officials have also indicated that no further matches should be played there before the championship final scheduled for May.
