Chaos erupted at the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington after gunshots were heard near the venue, forcing President Donald Trump and top US leaders to be evacuated immediately

Washington: A major security scare unfolded in Washington late Saturday night after gunshots were reported near the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, one of America’s highest-profile political and media events. President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and several senior officials were swiftly moved to secure
locations as panic spread through the crowded venue.

The annual dinner, held at the Washington Hilton Hotel, was packed with journalists, lawmakers, celebrities, diplomats, and White House officials when loud gunfire-like sounds suddenly interrupted the proceedings. Witnesses said multiple shots were heard, causing immediate fear and confusion inside the ballroom.

Trump Speech Halted, Security Moves In Seconds
According to eyewitness accounts, Secret Service personnel reacted instantly, surrounding Trump and escorting him away from the stage area. Guests were instructed to take cover, with many hiding under tables as armed security teams rushed into position.
Trump and other protected officials were later confirmed safe. No injuries were reported among top leaders attending the dinner.
“The President, First Lady, Vice President and Cabinet members are safe,” officials said after the incident.

Suspect in Custody, Investigation Underway
US law enforcement agencies confirmed that a suspect was detained after the incident. Reports indicate one officer was struck in protective gear and is expected to recover. Authorities are now investigating the motive, security breach details, and how the suspect approached the screening area.
The event was immediately suspended and is expected to be rescheduled later.
Fresh Questions Over US Presidential Security
The latest scare has reignited debate over presidential protection and event security, especially after the 2024 assassination attempt against Trump in Pennsylvania.
Security experts say the ability of an armed suspect to trigger panic near a venue hosting the President, Vice President, and senior cabinet members raises serious concerns.

Washington on High Alert
Additional security forces were deployed around the hotel and across parts of Washington as investigators combed the area and reviewed surveillance footage. More official details are expected in the coming hours.
