Ganpati Bhat, a Sanskrit college lecturer from Sirsi, was found dead in a house well near MGM College in Udupi; police probe underway after a missing person complaint


Udupi: In a tragic development, the body of a missing Sanskrit college lecturer was recovered from a well within his residence premises in Udupi on Saturday. Police suspect death by suicide, though a detailed investigation is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances.


The deceased has been identified as Ganpati Bhat (55), a native of Sirsi and an unmarried academic who was working at a Sanskrit college in Udupi. He had been residing in a rented house near MGM College before he was reported missing.


Body Found in Well at Residence
According to police sources, a missing person complaint had been registered earlier at the city police station after Bhat could not be traced. Following search efforts, his body was discovered in a well located within the house premises.

Fire brigade personnel were called to the spot and retrieved the body from the well. The recovery operation was carried out in the presence of police officials.

Police Initiate Legal Procedure and Investigation
Sub-inspector Narayana, along with city police staff including Ganesh D and investigation assistant Jaswa, conducted the necessary legal formalities at the scene. The body was later shifted to the district hospital post-mortem centre for examination.


Social worker Nithyananda Ullakadu assisted authorities in transporting the body. Police officials have stated that further details will emerge after the post-mortem report and investigation findings.


Focus on Circumstances Leading to Death
While initial suspicion points toward suicide, investigators are examining all possible angles, including personal, professional, and psychological factors that may have contributed to the incident.
