US President Donald Trump announced a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon after high-level talks, marking the first direct diplomatic engagement between the two sides in 34 years

Washington: In a major geopolitical development, US President Donald Trump has announced that Israel and Lebanon agreed to a 10-day ceasefire, a move that could temporarily halt escalating violence along the Israel-Lebanon border and open the door for wider peace negotiations in the Middle East.

The ceasefire, according to Trump’s statement, was scheduled to begin at 5 PM EST, following what he described as “excellent conversations” with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. The announcement has rapidly become one of the most discussed international developments of the day.

First Direct Talks in 34 Years
The breakthrough comes after Israeli and Lebanese representatives reportedly held direct talks in Washington earlier this week, the first such official engagement between the two nations since the early 1990s. Diplomatic sources described the meeting as a rare and historic step amid years of hostility.
The White House is said to have facilitated the dialogue, with senior officials, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, involved in the effort to secure the temporary truce.
What Triggered the Ceasefire
Recent weeks witnessed intense cross-border exchanges involving Israeli forces and Hezbollah-linked attacks from southern Lebanon. Airstrikes, rocket launches and civilian displacement increased pressure on global powers to intervene.

Trump’s announcement follows mounting concerns that continued conflict in Lebanon could destabilise broader regional diplomacy, especially parallel US-Iran discussions.

Trump Signals Bigger Peace Push
Trump stated that both leaders may be invited to the White House for further discussions aimed at a “lasting peace.” The US administration has indicated that the 10-day ceasefire is intended not merely as a pause in fighting, but as a platform for deeper negotiations.
“Both sides want peace, and I believe that will happen quickly,” Trump said in his public statement.
Uncertainty Remains Over Ground Reality
Despite the diplomatic announcement, analysts caution that implementation remains uncertain. Hezbollah was reportedly not a direct party to the talks, raising questions over how fully the ceasefire will hold on the ground.

Israeli officials have also indicated security operations could continue if threats emerge, making the truce fragile in its early phase.
