A major health alert has emerged in Bengaluru after H5N1 bird flu was detected at a government poultry farm in Hesaraghatta, prompting immediate closure, quarantine measures, and intensified inspections
Bengaluru: Fresh concerns over Bird Flu in Karnataka have surfaced after the highly infectious H5N1 avian influenza virus was detected at a state government-run poultry farm in Hesaraghatta, Bengaluru. Officials confirmed the presence of the virus during inspections carried out under directions from the Central Government.
Following the confirmation, authorities immediately shut down the infected poultry farm and launched emergency containment measures, as the facility was reportedly supplying poultry stock to several parts of the state.
H5N1 Bird Flu Reaches Bengaluru
The detection of H5N1 bird flu in Bengaluru has triggered concern among health and veterinary officials. Avian Influenza, commonly known as bird flu, primarily affects birds but can also infect humans and other animals in certain cases.
With the virus now confirmed inside city limits, officials have moved swiftly to prevent further spread.
Farm Workers Quarantined, Monitoring Begins
Authorities have quarantined poultry handlers and workers employed at the infected farm as a precautionary measure. Medical teams are monitoring their health conditions, while surveillance has been increased in surrounding areas.
Veterinary officers have also been directed to inspect nearby poultry sheds, farms, and bird-rearing units for possible signs of infection.
“Containment and surveillance steps have been intensified to prevent transmission,” officials indicated.
Heat May Increase Spread Risk
Experts have warned that rising summer temperatures and farm conditions can create environments where viral spread may become faster if hygiene and biosecurity measures are ignored.
This has led the Karnataka government to issue alerts at the Gram Panchayat level, while intensified inspections are being carried out at poultry centres and chicken retail outlets.
