Shopkeepers in Ulhasnagar’s furniture market allege BMC inaction as foul-smelling waste remains uncleared for four days, and customers are staying away

Mumbai: A growing sanitation crisis in Mumbai has sparked anger among traders after garbage dumped during drain cleaning in Oshiwara’s Ward 64 has remained uncleared for four days, severely affecting local businesses.

The issue, reported from the Oshiwara Furniture Market area near Ulhasnagar, has raised questions over the functioning of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), with traders alleging complete inaction despite repeated complaints.

Waste Dumped After Drain Cleaning, Left Rotting for Days
According to local shopkeepers, municipal workers carried out gutter cleaning on Saturday, but instead of clearing the waste, it was dumped directly in front of shops in the busy furniture market.

Four days later, the garbage remains unattended, emitting a pungent and unbearable stench, making it difficult for both shop owners and customers to remain in the area.

Businesses Suffer as Customers Stay Away
Traders claim that the situation has begun to impact daily business, with customers avoiding the market due to hygiene concerns and foul smell.

Several shop owners expressed frustration, stating that the delay in waste clearance is causing financial losses and health risks.

“Customers are staying away because of the smell. This is directly disrupting our business, and no one is responding.”

Complaint Goes Viral, No Official Response Yet
The issue gained traction after a user identified as Safa Khan (@safakhan9100) highlighted the matter on X (formerly Twitter), drawing public attention to the civic negligence.

Despite the post going viral and tagging authorities, the BMC has neither cleared the garbage nor issued any official response, further intensifying public outrage.

Civic Apathy Raises Health Concerns
Residents and traders warn that the prolonged accumulation of waste in a commercial area could lead to serious health hazards, including the spread of infections and respiratory issues.

Locals are now demanding immediate intervention from civic authorities to remove the waste and restore normalcy in the market.
