Karnataka prison breach raises alarm as contraband packed in a cricket ball lands inside jail, inmate retrieves it; police launch probe into smuggling network

Mandya: In a startling breach of prison security, authorities in Mandya have uncovered a new and dangerous smuggling tactic, where ganja and a mobile phone were concealed inside a cricket ball and thrown into the district jail premises.

The incident, which has triggered serious concerns over jail security and contraband circulation, was captured on CCTV cameras, exposing the method used to bypass surveillance and supply prohibited items to inmates.

Cricket Ball Used to Sneak in Contraband
According to officials, unidentified miscreants allegedly hid ganja and a mobile phone inside a cricket ball, which was then thrown over the prison wall into the jail compound.

CCTV footage reportedly shows the object being tossed inside, after which an inmate identified as Naga alias Handinaga retrieved the ball from within the premises.

Upon inspection, authorities found approximately 10 grams of ganja and a mobile phone concealed inside the ball, confirming suspicions of an organised smuggling attempt.

CCTV Footage Exposes Inside Link
The visuals have raised serious questions about internal involvement and coordination, as the inmate’s immediate retrieval of the ball suggests prior knowledge of the drop.

Officials believe this could indicate a well-planned network operating both inside and outside the prison, exploiting gaps in security.

Police Launch Investigation
Police have initiated an investigation to identify the individuals responsible for the smuggling operation and trace the larger network behind the supply of narcotics and contraband into the jail.

Authorities are also probing whether similar methods have been used in the past and if more inmates are linked to the operation.

Security Concerns Mount
The incident has once again highlighted persistent challenges in curbing contraband inside prisons, particularly the entry of drugs and communication devices that can facilitate criminal activities from within jail premises.

Officials are expected to review security protocols and surveillance mechanisms to prevent such breaches in the future.
