Family in Kozhikode shocked after discovering five Common Krait snakelets beneath sleeping child’s pillow, experts warn of deadly nocturnal threat

Kozhikode: In a chilling incident that has left residents shaken, a family in Kozhikode discovered five highly venomous snakes hidden under a child’s pillow in the middle of the night, narrowly averting a potentially fatal tragedy.

The snakes were identified as hatchlings of the Common Krait, considered among the most dangerous snakes in India, known for their potent neurotoxic venom.

Midnight Noises Lead to Shocking Discovery
According to reports, the child was sleeping peacefully when parents heard unusual sounds and suspicious movements coming from the room late at night. Initially dismissing it as minor disturbance, they grew concerned as the noises persisted.

On closer inspection, when the pillow was moved, the family was left horrified to find multiple snakelets wriggling beneath it, dangerously close to the sleeping child.

“It was a moment of sheer terror, death was literally lurking under the pillow where the child slept,” a local resident said.

Five Venomous Snakes Recovered From Bed
What made the incident even more alarming was the discovery that not just one, but five snakes were present inside the house. They were found on the bed, under pillows, and between mattresses, indicating a serious intrusion into the living space.

The family immediately alerted a local snake rescue team, who arrived promptly and safely captured all five snakes without causing harm to the occupants.

Experts Warn of Hidden Snake Breeding Nearby
Experts believe the presence of multiple snakelets suggests that eggs may have been laid in cracks within the house or nearby surroundings, leading to the sudden emergence of the hatchlings.

Snakes like the Common Krait are nocturnal by nature, often entering homes at night in search of warmth, especially in bedding areas such as mattresses and blankets.

Deadly Yet Silent Threat During Sleep
Wildlife experts warn that bites from kraits can often go unnoticed during sleep, as their bite marks are minimal and painless initially. However, their venom is extremely dangerous, affecting the nervous system and potentially causing paralysis or death if untreated.

The incident has raised serious concerns about household safety and awareness, especially in regions prone to snake activity.

Local Panic and Safety Advisory Issued
The shocking discovery has triggered panic among residents in the locality, with many now inspecting their homes for possible snake entry points. Authorities and experts have urged people to seal wall cracks, maintain cleanliness, and remain vigilant during night hours.
