Massive outrage grows in Karnataka as student groups and community leaders seek grace marks or re-exam after the alleged removal of the sacred thread during the CET exams
Bengaluru: A major controversy has erupted in Karnataka after several students appearing for the KCET examination were allegedly asked to remove their Janivara (sacred thread) at exam centres. The issue has triggered widespread outrage, with fresh demands for grace marks or a re-examination for affected students.
Community organisations have alleged that the incident caused emotional distress and mental pressure on students during a crucial competitive exam, potentially affecting their performance and rankings.
Students Allegedly Disturbed During Physics Exam
According to reports, the controversy surfaced on the first day of KCET, particularly during the Physics examination, where students at multiple centres were allegedly forced to remove their sacred thread before entering halls.
Critics say the action not only hurt religious sentiments but also caused panic and distraction at a critical time.
Leaders from the Akhila Karnataka Brahmana Mahasabha stated that students entered the exam hall mentally disturbed and were unable to write the paper properly.
“Students faced emotional shock during the exam. Their rankings may suffer because of this pressure.”
The organisation has reportedly submitted representations to the Karnataka government and the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA).
Demand for Grace Marks or Re-Exam
Many parents have also expressed concern that students may lose valuable ranks due to circumstances beyond their control.
Reacting strongly to the issue, Rajajinagar MLA Suresh Kumar reportedly condemned the conduct of exam centre staff.
He stated that actions such as cutting sacred threads or forcing students to remove earrings create unnecessary stress for candidates already under exam pressure.
He further noted that similar issues had reached the High Court last year, after which assurances were reportedly given that such incidents would not recur.
Suresh Kumar has urged Higher Education Minister M.C. Sudhakar to immediately intervene and issue a clear Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) regarding Janivara and similar matters.
Protest Against Government Announced
The Akhila Bharatiya Brahmana Mahasangha has announced a large protest against the government, claiming the incident violates religious rights and cultural practices.
The group is demanding legal action against responsible officials and compensation through grace marks for affected students.
