Two FIRs filed in Puttur over alleged abusive remarks against artists, police probe audio clip linked to stage show dispute
Mangaluru: Fresh controversy has erupted in coastal Karnataka after Mahesh Shetty Timarodi was booked in separate police cases over allegations of abusing and threatening Yakshagana artists in connection with a performance titled “Burude Gang.”
Police said separate complaints were registered at Puttur Women Police Station and Puttur Rural Police Station following allegations that objectionable language was used during a phone conversation concerning the stage production.
What Triggered the Dispute
According to the complaints, the Yakshagana performance allegedly contained themes or satire that some individuals believed mocked an ongoing public campaign linked to earlier allegations surrounding the Dharmasthala burial controversy.
The show reportedly drew strong objections from Timarodi, who has been associated with raising issues connected to that matter.
Alleged Phone Call and Audio Clip
Complainants alleged that on April 11, Timarodi called Yakshagana comedian Prajwal Gurunayankere and allegedly used abusive words against artists Dinesh Shettigar and actor Mandar Sundar Rai.
The complaints further allege that insulting remarks were made about family members, causing emotional distress.
An audio clip of the alleged conversation was later reportedly shared with the concerned artists, after which they approached the police.
“The audio deeply hurt the artists and their families,” the complaint reportedly stated.
Two Separate FIRs Registered
Based on complaints filed by those affected, the police registered:
- One case at Puttur Rural Police Station
- Another case at Puttur Women Police Station
Authorities are expected to examine the audio recording, statements of witnesses and other digital evidence during the investigation.
Timarodi’s Objection
In the alleged audio conversation, Timarodi is said to have questioned why such a story was turned into a Yakshagana performance and argued that traditional art forms carry dignity and responsibility.
Police have not yet publicly confirmed the full authenticity of the circulated clip.
Investigation Underway
Officials said both complaints are under inquiry, and legal action will proceed based on evidence and applicable law.
