Viral Clip Sparks Debate Over Toll Rules, Road Safety and Enforcement After Cyclist Stopped on High-Speed Corridor

Bengaluru: A bizarre incident on Bengaluru’s Electronic City flyover has triggered widespread debate after a toll booth staff member was seen demanding Rs. 25 from a cyclist, raising serious questions over toll regulations, enforcement practices, and commuter safety.

The incident, captured on video and shared on X by user Hate Detector  (@HateDetectors), has since gone viral, drawing mixed reactions from the public.

Cyclist Stopped, Asked to Pay Toll Without a Clear Rule
According to the viral video, a cyclist, reportedly on an all-India tour, was stopped at the toll plaza on the Electronic City flyover and asked to pay a Rs. 25 toll fee.

The cyclist questioned the demand, asking the staff member to specify the rule under which bicycles are charged toll and requested to see the official guidelines. However, the staff member was unable to provide a clear explanation and allegedly became aggressive, asking the cyclist to move aside.

Rate Chart Lists Bikes, Not Cycles
Visuals from the toll booth show a rate chart displaying charges for motor vehicles, including two-wheelers, with a Rs 25 toll and a Rs. 40 day pass mentioned for bikes.

However, cycles were not listed anywhere on the chart, making the demand appear inconsistent with the displayed rules. Despite this, the staff member reportedly continued insisting on payment.

“If cycles are not mentioned, under what rule is toll being collected?” questioned a user in response to the video.

Online Reactions Divided Over Rules and Safety
The viral clip has sparked polarised reactions online. While many users criticised the toll staff for allegedly demanding money without a valid rule, others raised serious safety concerns.

Several users pointed out that cycling on high-speed corridors like the Electronic City flyover is inherently dangerous, as the road is designed for fast-moving vehicles such as cars, buses, and trucks.

Some argued that instead of focusing solely on toll collection, authorities should ensure strict enforcement of road usage norms, especially for vulnerable commuters like cyclists.

Rules and Safety Concerns Under Scrutiny
In general, cycles and certain slow-moving vehicles are restricted on expressways and elevated corridors meant for high-speed traffic. The Electronic City flyover is widely considered a high-speed infrastructure zone, where cycling could pose a serious risk to life.

The incident has now sparked a broader conversation about the clarity of toll policies, ground-level enforcement, and public awareness of road regulations.

No Official Statement Yet
As of now, there has been no official clarification from toll authorities or Bengaluru traffic police regarding the incident or the rules applicable to cyclists on the flyover.
