Serious Irregularities Surface in Belur as Land Linked to Historic Temple Trust Allegedly Transferred Through Suspect Records
Hassan: A major land controversy has erupted in the world-famous temple town of Belur in Karnataka, where land reportedly belonging to the historic Vidyaganapati Temple Trust has allegedly been transferred into private hands through questionable documentation. The disputed property is said to be worth crores of rupees, triggering outrage among locals and prompting calls for immediate action.
According to allegations raised locally, around 20 guntas of land in Survey No. 27 had been associated with the Vidyaganapati Trust for nearly five decades. Of this, 10 guntas were reportedly allotted earlier to temple priests.
It is claimed that in 1995, the allotted 10 guntas were sold to a private individual named Mallikarjun. However, allegations now suggest that instead of limiting ownership to the purchased portion, records were manipulated to include the remaining 10 guntas linked to the temple trust as well.
Measurement Discrepancy Raises Red Flags
Complainants allege that while records should have reflected approximately 10,000 square feet, officials allegedly processed e-property documentation for nearly 24,000 square feet, intensifying suspicion of irregularities.
Further claims state that map directions and land boundaries may have been altered during the documentation process.
If verified, the case could expose serious misuse of public office and loss of religious trust property.
Public Anger Grows Over Old Complaints
Locals have reportedly alleged that, despite earlier complaints, documents reflecting the disputed larger measurement were issued again in 2019. This has sparked anger over whether warnings were ignored.
Minister Orders Inquiry
During a public grievance meeting in Belur, the district-in-charge minister reportedly reacted strongly after hearing the complaint. Officials have been directed to conduct a comprehensive investigation within one week and submit a report.
Officials Yet to Issue Final Version
At this stage, allegations remain subject to official verification. No final determination of guilt or wrongdoing has been announced.
Why This Case Matters
Belur is internationally known for its temple heritage. Any confirmed encroachment or fraudulent transfer involving temple assets would carry significant legal, cultural, and public trust implications.
