Basti: Authorities in Basti district, Uttar Pradesh, have begun an investigation after a newborn died during an attempted emergency delivery inside an ambulance. At the same time, a pregnant woman was being taken to a health centre.

The woman, identified in reports as Prema Devi, was around seven months pregnant when she reportedly developed labour pain and was being transported to a community health centre.

Delivery Attempt During Transit

According to initial allegations, a health worker inside the ambulance attempted to assist with the delivery before the vehicle reached the hospital. Complications reportedly arose during the process, resulting in the death of the baby.

The mother was later referred to higher medical facilities for urgent treatment.
“The woman was shifted for advanced care after complications during transit,” officials said.

Doctors at a district medical facility provided emergency treatment to the woman. Reports said she is now out of immediate danger and continues to receive medical care.

Police Case Registered

Police have registered a case against persons involved in the incident, including ambulance staff and a health worker, based on complaints and preliminary findings.
Officials are expected to review medical procedures followed during the transport and whether established emergency childbirth protocols were violated.
Questions Over Rural Maternal Care

The incident has raised concerns over maternal healthcare access, emergency transport readiness, and training standards for frontline workers in rural areas.
