Deputy CM cites failure in Davanagere bypoll responsibility, urges MLAs to maintain discipline and caution while speaking to the media

Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar on Tuesday defended Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s decision to remove Naseer Ahmed from the post of political secretary, stating that the move was taken based on inputs from multiple sources in the interest of the party.

Shivakumar was speaking to the media at his residence and KPCC office in Sadashivanagar amid growing political discussion over the development.

‘Decision Based on Reports and Ground Inputs’
Clarifying the rationale behind the action, Shivakumar said the party had assigned Naseer Ahmed a specific responsibility during the Davanagere South by-election, which was not fulfilled.

“The Chief Minister has taken a decision on Nasir Ahmed after getting information from his own various sources in the interest of the party,” Shivakumar said.

“He was instructed to go to Davanagere South constituency and make the rebel candidate withdraw. He has failed to fulfil this responsibility. I am yet to receive a full report,” he added.

‘Discipline Is Very Important in the Party’
Emphasising internal order, Shivakumar underlined that discipline remains a key pillar of party functioning.

“Discipline is very important in any party. The Chief Minister has taken a decision based on reports from our leaders,” he said.

When asked about possible action against other leaders, including B. Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan, Shivakumar said he had no information on further disciplinary steps.

MLAs Advised to Be Cautious With Media
The Deputy CM also issued a clear advisory to party MLAs, urging them to exercise caution while interacting with the media.

“There is nothing wrong in MLAs asking for ministerial berths. But the party should maintain discipline. I have advised them to be careful while responding to media questions,” he said.

Meetings With MLAs Ahead of Local Elections
Shivakumar confirmed that he has been holding discussions with MLAs regarding upcoming municipal and local body elections, as well as reviewing developments in recent bypolls.

“It is my duty as party president to discuss strategy with MLAs and shape the future. They are reporting developments from Davanagere South and Bagalkot by-elections,” he noted.

Chennai Visit for Campaign
On his schedule, Shivakumar said he would travel to Chennai later in the day to participate in an election campaign programme on Wednesday.

Political Signals Within Congress
The statements are being seen as a strong message from the leadership on maintaining discipline and accountability within the Indian National Congress, especially amid recent internal developments in Karnataka.
