Teen Allegedly Took Extreme Step Within Minutes After Phone Was Confiscated; Police Urge Gradual Intervention for Screen Addiction

Hubballi: In a deeply distressing incident, a 14-year-old boy died by suicide in Udayanagar, Hubballi, reportedly minutes after his mother took away his mobile phone over concerns about excessive gaming. The case has sparked serious debate around mobile addiction among children and the need for parental guidance and mental health awareness.

The deceased, identified as Samarth, had reportedly been addicted to online games such as Garena Free Fire for several weeks. According to police, the incident occurred on Thursday night when his mother advised him to reduce screen time and focus on studies, before confiscating his phone.

Incident Unfolded Within Minutes
Upset by the incident, Samarth allegedly went to his room and locked the door from inside. When he did not respond for nearly 15–20 minutes, his father grew suspicious and looked through a window, only to find the boy hanging.

The family immediately broke open the door and rushed him to hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival. A case has been registered at the Keshwapur Police Station, and further investigation is underway.

Police Commissioner Issues Advisory to Parents
Reacting to the tragedy, Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar called the incident “extremely unfortunate” and urged parents to adopt balanced and gradual approaches while dealing with children addicted to mobile devices.

“Parents must be cautious. Sudden restrictions can trigger extreme reactions. If a child is deeply addicted, seek help from teachers or child experts and guide them step by step,” he said.

He also stressed that mobile usage should be redirected toward constructive activities, such as learning new skills, language development, and academic preparation through educational platforms.

Rising Concern Over Digital Addiction Among Youth
The incident has once again highlighted the growing risk of digital addiction among teenagers, with experts warning that excessive gaming can impact emotional stability and decision-making.

Authorities and educators are calling for greater awareness, open communication within families, and early intervention strategies to prevent such tragedies.
