Massive avalanche near Zero Point traps vehicles, Army and NDRF launch intense rescue amid extreme weather conditions
Srinagar: A devastating avalanche struck the strategic Zojila Pass on Friday, leaving at least seven people dead and five seriously injured, while several vehicles remain feared buried under thick layers of snow. The incident has triggered a massive rescue operation under extremely hostile weather conditions.
Avalanche Engulfs Vehicles in Seconds
The tragedy unfolded near Zero Point during heavy snowfall and blizzard-like conditions. Eyewitnesses reported that the avalanche descended with sudden and overwhelming force, engulfing multiple passenger and cargo vehicles within moments.
Officials confirmed that at least three to four vehicles were trapped, with travelers buried under snow. Rescue teams managed to pull out 12 individuals, including seven who were declared dead and five who sustained serious injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals.
Army, NDRF Lead High-Risk Rescue Mission
Personnel from the Indian Army, local police, and administrative teams, along with the National Disaster Response Force, were deployed immediately. The operation continues under extreme challenges, including sub-zero temperatures, high altitude, and continuous snowfall.
Rescuers are racing against time as some vehicles are still stranded, and fears remain that more people could be trapped beneath the snow.
Road Closed, Traffic Disrupted
Authorities have shut down the Zojila Pass route following the incident. Efforts are underway to clear snow debris and restore connectivity, though persistent bad weather continues to hamper operations.
Officials stated that all the deceased were residents of Kargil and Ladakh, intensifying grief across the region.
Leaders Express Grief, Monitoring Situation Closely
Vinay Kumar Saxena expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, stating that he has directed officials to ensure immediate rescue and relief operations while closely monitoring the situation.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh also conveyed condolences, assuring that the injured are receiving all necessary medical assistance.
“Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives… my condolences to the families,” he said.

The incident once again highlights the extreme vulnerability of high-altitude routes like Zojila Pass, especially during winter months when avalanches pose a constant threat. Authorities continue to urge caution while traveling through such sensitive zones.
Rescue efforts remain ongoing as teams battle harsh terrain and weather to locate any remaining survivors.
