Speaking exclusively to NewsFlash Daily™, Bengaluru hotel owners warn of a 10% price hike on breakfast items as commercial LPG shortage disrupts kitchen operations across the city

Bengaluru: Hotels and tiffin centres across Bengaluru are facing a serious shortage of commercial LPG cylinders, a situation that could soon push up the prices of popular breakfast items such as idli, dosa and puri.

Restaurant owners say the supply disruption has started affecting daily kitchen operations, forcing many establishments to consider price hikes and menu adjustments to manage rising operational costs.

“As of now we have not increased prices, but from Monday we will increase around 10 percent. For example, dosa currently costs Rs 40 per plate, and we will add about 10 percent because we are facing a heavy cylinder shortage,” Amar Shetty, owner of Sri Udupi Park, told NewsFlash Daily™.

Shetty said the situation has become difficult for restaurants as the availability of commercial LPG cylinders has sharply declined.

When NewsFlash Daily™ asked whether customer footfall might drop after the price increase, Shetty said restaurant owners currently have very limited options.

“Customers may reduce or may not, we have not thought about it yet. But due to the cylinder demand and shortage, we have no other option but to increase prices,” he said.

Local Hotels Begin Small Price Adjustments

Meanwhile, some smaller eateries have opted for minimal price increases to manage the crisis.

A local hotel owner, Nirmal, told NewsFlash Daily™ that his stall has increased prices slightly.

“We run a small local stall, so we have increased prices by just Rs 5 for now. Let’s see what happens in the coming days,” he said.

Reports indicate that many hotels across Bengaluru have already increased prices of items such as idli, dosa and puri by Rs 5 to Rs 10 due to supply disruptions.

Gas Shortage Hits Hotel Kitchens

Hotel owners say the shortage of commercial LPG cylinders is making it difficult to maintain regular food production.

In some areas, restaurants have reportedly reduced menu options temporarily because of limited gas availability.

Items that require higher gas consumption, including puri, dosa and vada, have been removed from menus in certain eateries until the situation improves.

Restaurant operators say the shortage has begun to disrupt normal business operations across the city’s breakfast economy.

Middle East Conflict Linked to Supply Disruption

Industry sources say the shortage has been aggravated by fuel supply disruptions linked to the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, which have affected LPG supply chains.

Hotel owners also pointed out that rising raw material costs along with higher gas prices have significantly increased operational expenses.

Because of this, many restaurants say food price hikes are becoming unavoidable.

Hotels Warn of Possible Closures

Hotel associations have warned that if the LPG supply issue continues, several hotels in the city could be forced to shut down temporarily.

Such closures would directly impact thousands of people who rely on affordable breakfast at Bengaluru’s local hotels and tiffin centres every day.

With supply disruptions continuing, industry insiders say prices of several breakfast items including idli, dosa and puri could increase further in the coming days.
