Fresh airstrikes reported in Kabul, Kandahar, Paktia and Paktika; Taliban accuses Pakistan of targeting civilian homes ahead of Eid
Kabul: Rising geopolitical tensions in the region are fueling fears of wider instability as hostilities between the United States and Iran threaten to escalate into a broader conflict, while clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan are simultaneously intensifying.
According to officials in Afghanistan, fresh airstrikes allegedly carried out by Pakistani forces were reported early Friday across several regions, including Kabul, Kandahar, Paktia Province and Paktika Province. The strikes have raised concerns about a new phase of cross-border military escalation between the neighbouring countries.
Airstrike Targets Near Kandahar Airport
Authorities claimed that one of the major strikes occurred near Kandahar International Airport, where an alleged attack targeted a fuel depot located close to the airport facility.
Spokespersons from the ruling Taliban administration accused Pakistan of conducting the strikes and warned that the attacks could further destabilise already fragile relations between the two nations.
Taliban representatives also alleged that Pakistani military forces struck residential areas in some locations, leading to civilian casualties.
“Pakistani military forces targeted civilian homes in several areas, killing women and children. Carrying out such attacks during the holy month of Ramadan and ahead of Eid shows disregard for humanitarian and moral values,” a Taliban spokesperson said while condemning the operation.
Civilian Casualties Reported in Kabul
Meanwhile, police officials confirmed casualties following a bombing incident involving residential buildings in Kabul.
Khalid Zadran, spokesperson for the Kabul police, stated in a social media update that at least four people were killed and 15 others injured after bombs struck houses in parts of the Afghan capital.
Emergency responders and local security forces were deployed to the affected neighbourhoods to assist the wounded and assess the damage.
Regional Tensions Rising
The renewed hostilities between Pakistan and Afghanistan come at a sensitive time for the region, as global attention is already focused on the possibility of confrontation between the United States and Iran. Analysts warn that simultaneous conflicts could increase instability across South and Central Asia.
Security experts note that cross-border tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have periodically escalated due to militant activity along the shared frontier, but direct airstrikes inside Afghan territory represent a serious diplomatic and military flashpoint.
Officials from both countries have yet to release comprehensive statements clarifying the full extent of the incidents.
As investigations continue, humanitarian groups are urging restraint to prevent further civilian casualties and calling for dialogue to avoid a broader regional crisis.
