IMD warns of moderate rain, lightning, and gusty winds across Karnataka while several districts remain under dry spell, triggering mixed weather patterns
Bengaluru: After days of persistent dry weather across the state, Karnataka is set to witness a sudden shift in climate, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in several parts, including Bengaluru. A yellow alert has been issued for 17 districts, signaling potential weather disruptions.
The IMD has clarified that while Karnataka braces for unstable weather conditions, the rest of the country is expected to largely remain dry over the next few days, indicating a localized atmospheric disturbance impacting the state.
Yellow Alert in 17 Districts Raises Concern
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for multiple districts, warning residents to stay cautious due to possible thunderstorms and sudden rain spells. The affected districts include Bidar, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Vijayapura, Raichur, Bagalkot, Koppal, Vijayanagar, Davangere, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Ramanagara, and Kolar.
“Moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely in several districts, and precautionary measures are advised,” the Meteorological Department stated.
Thunderstorms, Winds to Hit Northern and Southern Interior Regions
According to the forecast, northern interior districts such as Belagavi, Haveri, Gadag, and Dharwad are likely to experience moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching 30–40 km/h, raising concerns over localized disruptions.
Similarly, southern interior districts including Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, and Mysuru are expected to witness thundershowers with lightning activity, further intensifying the evolving weather pattern across the state.
Dry Spell Continues in Coastal and Select Interior Districts
Despite the rain alert, several regions will continue to face dry weather conditions, highlighting a stark contrast within the state’s climate. Coastal districts such as Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, and Uttara Kannada are expected to remain dry.
Additionally, parts of the southern interior, including Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Chikkaballapur, Chitradurga, Davangere, Kolar, Mandya, Ramanagara, Chamarajanagara, Tumakuru, and Vijayanagara, will also largely witness dry conditions.
Extended Dry Conditions in Northern Karnataka
The IMD further noted that districts like Bidar, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Gadag, Kalaburagi, Koppal, Ballari, Raichur, Yadgir, and Vijayanagar have been experiencing prolonged dry weather for several days, and this trend is expected to persist even as scattered rain impacts nearby areas.
