Vijayanagara: A tragic road accident claimed the lives of a 14-year-old schoolgirl and her grandfather near Kudligi in Vijayanagara district of Karnataka on Wednesday.

The incident occurred on National Highway 50 near Kasanakere village when the motorcycle they were travelling on reportedly skidded after passing over ragi grains spread across the highway for drying.

According to initial reports, Srishti had just completed her school examination and was returning home to Karnarhatti along with her grandfather on a motorcycle.
Bike Skids on Ragi Spread on Highway
As they reached the stretch near Kasanakere village, farmers had reportedly spread ragi grains on the highway to dry.

When the motorcycle passed over the grains, it lost balance and skidded, throwing both riders onto the road.

Speeding Lorry Runs Over Girl
Moments after the fall, a speeding lorry ran over the girl, crushing her head. Due to the severity of the accident, both the grandfather and granddaughter died on the spot.

Locals Blame Unsafe Grain Drying on Highways
Local residents expressed strong anger over the practice of drying agricultural produce on highways, stating that it has repeatedly posed a danger to motorists.

Residents alleged that spreading grains such as ragi on busy highways creates slippery conditions, which can lead to fatal accidents like this one.

Police Investigation Underway
Police from the Kudligi Police Station rushed to the spot, conducted an inspection and registered a case.
Authorities have begun investigating the incident and are also examining whether action should be taken against those responsible for spreading grains on the highway.
Meanwhile, local citizens have demanded strict enforcement of rules to prevent drying of crops on highways, warning that such practices could lead to more tragic accidents if not stopped.
