Oil companies urge citizens not to panic-buy as viral rumours trigger long queues at fuel stations across major cities
New Delhi: Amid growing panic and viral rumours about a possible fuel crisis, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has issued a strong clarification, stating that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or aviation turbine fuel (ATF) anywhere in India. The company reassured citizens that fuel stocks are sufficient and supply chains remain fully operational.
In recent hours, misinformation about fuel shortages spread rapidly across several cities, including Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Indore, Ahmedabad, Surat, and Nagpur, leading to long queues at petrol pumps. Videos circulating on social media showed motorists rushing to fill full tanks, fearing an impending shortage.
Official Clarification: No Shortage Anywhere
BPCL dismissed these claims as “baseless and unfounded”, emphasizing that India has ample reserves of crude oil and refined petroleum products. The company highlighted that the country not only meets its domestic demand but also exports petroleum products to other nations, reflecting strong supply stability.
“There is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or ATF across the country. Fuel supplies are stable, and we urge citizens not to panic-buy unnecessarily,” BPCL said in its official statement.
Supply Chain Fully Functional
The company further clarified that all refineries and distribution networks are functioning smoothly, ensuring uninterrupted fuel availability. BPCL reiterated its commitment to maintaining a continuous and reliable supply across India.
LPG Concerns Fuel Public Anxiety
The panic has been partly driven by ongoing concerns over LPG availability, where delays in booking and delivery have affected households and businesses. Several hotels and eateries have reportedly faced disruptions due to LPG supply issues, raising fears that similar shortages could extend to petrol and diesel.
India’s Fuel Position Remains Strong
Experts note that while LPG supply is more dependent on imports—especially from Gulf countries—India sources crude oil from multiple regions, including Russia, and refines it domestically. This ensures that petrol and diesel stocks remain stable and sufficient.
Authorities Urge Calm
Officials have appealed to the public to avoid unnecessary panic buying, warning that such behaviour can create artificial shortages and disrupt normal distribution systems.
