Teaser claiming ‘based on a true incident’ sparks outrage as similarities emerge with the Renukaswamy murder case; Darshan’s lawyer urges CBFC not to certify the film

Bengaluru: The upcoming Kannada film ‘Boss’ has landed in controversy even before its release, after actor Darshan’s legal team issued a notice to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) seeking to halt the film’s certification. The move comes amid concerns that the movie’s teaser appears to closely resemble the ongoing Renukaswamy murder case, in which the actor is currently an accused.

Darshan is presently in judicial custody as Accused No.2 (A2) in the high-profile murder case related to Renukaswamy, a case that has attracted widespread public attention across Karnataka.

The controversy erupted after the teaser of ‘Boss’, which is preparing for release, began circulating online and triggered debate over its storyline and visual elements.

Teaser Sparks Debate Over ‘True Incident’ Claim

According to critics and observers, several scenes in the teaser appear to resemble key elements associated with the Renukaswamy case. The teaser reportedly features visuals of sheds and kennels, along with a narrative where a celebrity figure becomes entangled in a criminal investigation and claims innocence.

The controversy intensified after the film’s promotional material indicated that the story was “based on a true incident.”

Legal experts and social media users quickly pointed out the similarity between the teaser’s narrative and the ongoing criminal case involving Darshan.

Many questioned the appropriateness of releasing a film seemingly inspired by an active court case, particularly when the judicial proceedings have not yet concluded.

Background of the Renukaswamy Murder Case

According to the police charge sheet, Renukaswamy was allegedly brought from Chitradurga to Bengaluru, where he was reportedly assaulted and murdered at a shed in the Pattangere area.

Investigators have alleged that actor Darshan and Pavithra Gowda were present at the location during the incident. The body was later allegedly dumped near a culvert, after which several individuals involved in disposing of the body were arrested.

During the course of the investigation, Darshan’s name reportedly surfaced, leading to his arrest. The actor has consistently maintained his innocence in the case, which is currently under trial.

Legal Notice to Censor Board

Amid the growing controversy, Darshan’s legal team has now issued a notice to the CBFC, requesting the board not to grant certification to the film ‘Boss’.

The notice reportedly argues that the movie could influence public perception regarding an ongoing criminal trial, potentially affecting the fairness of judicial proceedings.

Legal observers say such concerns often arise when films appear to mirror real-life criminal cases that are still pending before courts.

Film Team Responds

Meanwhile, director Love Action Cut has responded to the controversy, clarifying that actor Tanush Shivanna has not played the role of the hero in the film, countering speculation about casting and storyline connections.

Despite the clarification, the debate surrounding the movie continues to grow, with many questioning whether cinematic portrayals linked to real-life criminal investigations should be released before court verdicts are delivered.

The final decision on the film’s certification now rests with the Central Board of Film Certification, which will review the content and legal objections before granting or withholding clearance.
