New LPG prices take effect across India from March 7, raising the cost of household cooking gas and commercial cylinders, while the government assures adequate fuel supply despite global uncertainties

New Delhi: India woke up to a sharp increase in LPG cylinder prices on Saturday, March 7, as cooking gas rates were revised across the country. The sudden hike has added to household expenses and operational costs for businesses, coming at a time when global energy markets remain volatile amid geopolitical tensions.

According to sources, the price of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder has been increased by Rs 60 nationwide, while 19 kg commercial LPG cylinders have become costlier by Rs 115. The revised rates came into effect immediately on Saturday.

Domestic LPG Cylinder Prices Rise in Major Cities

The increase has pushed cooking gas prices higher in major metropolitan cities. In Delhi, the cost of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder has risen from Rs 853 to Rs 913. In Mumbai, the new price stands at Rs 912.50, up from Rs 852.50 earlier.

Similarly, in Kolkata, the price has increased from Rs 879 to Rs 930, while in Chennai, the rate has gone up from Rs 868.50 to Rs 928.50. The revision marks the first major change in domestic LPG rates since April 2025, when the non-subsidised cylinder price in Delhi was fixed at Rs 853.

Bengaluru LPG Price Today

In Bengaluru, the price of a non-subsidised 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder currently stands at Rs 855.50, while a 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder costs Rs 1,814.

The hike is expected to impact both households and businesses, especially the hospitality sector which heavily depends on LPG for daily operations.

Commercial LPG Cylinder Prices Surge

Commercial establishments have also been hit by the revision. In Delhi, the price of a 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder has increased from Rs 1,768.50 to Rs 1,883.

In Mumbai, the price has risen from Rs 1,720.50 to Rs 1,835. Meanwhile, Kolkata has witnessed a jump from Rs 1,875.50 to Rs 1,990, and in Chennai, the rate has climbed from Rs 1,929 to Rs 2,043.50.

Restaurants, hotels, catering services and small commercial units are expected to feel the impact of the price hike in the coming weeks.

Government Assures No Fuel Shortage

Despite rising prices and concerns over global energy supply, the government has reassured citizens that India faces no fuel shortage.

“Our priority is to ensure affordable and sustainable energy for citizens. There is no shortage of energy in India, consumers need not worry,” said Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri in a post on X.

Officials emphasised that the country’s fuel supply network remains stable and that authorities are continuously monitoring the situation.Indian Oil Dismisses Fuel Shortage Rumours

Meanwhile, Indian Oil Corporation has rejected social media reports suggesting shortages of petrol or diesel in the country.

“India has ample fuel reserves, and supply and distribution systems are functioning normally. Citizens should not panic or crowd fuel stations,” the company stated on X.

The company urged people to rely only on official information regarding fuel availability.

India’s Energy Security and Strategic Supply Planning

Government sources said India remains well-positioned in terms of crude oil, petroleum products and LPG supply, despite concerns over disruptions in global shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.

Officials noted that India sources energy from multiple countries, reducing the risk of supply disruptions from any single region. The country also maintains adequate strategic reserves of crude oil and petroleum products to meet domestic demand.

Authorities are reportedly exploring alternative supply routes and sources to ensure stability in case geopolitical tensions escalate.

Russia Emerges as Major Crude Oil Supplier

Since 2022, Russia has become one of India’s key crude oil suppliers. Government data indicates that Russia’s share in India’s crude imports has increased significantly in recent years.

In February alone, India imported around 20 percent of its total crude oil requirements from Russia, equivalent to approximately 1.04 million barrels per day.

This diversification strategy has helped India maintain stable fuel supplies despite fluctuations in global energy markets.

Steps to Strengthen LPG Supply in India

The government has also directed LPG refineries across the country to increase production to maintain adequate availability for domestic consumption.

Officials said India’s current LPG storage levels are satisfactory, ensuring that the recent price hike is not linked to any immediate shortage.

In addition, India has started receiving LPG shipments from the United States since January, strengthening its supply chain.

In November 2025, public sector oil companies signed a one-year agreement to import about 2.2 million tonnes of LPG annually from the US Gulf Coast for the 2026 contract year.
