Gas crisis disrupts hotels and resorts in Uttara Kannada, booking cancellations rise as tourists miss iconic coastal food experience

Karwar: A severe LPG cylinder shortage in Karwar has begun to cripple the tourism sector in Uttara Kannada, leaving both hoteliers and tourists frustrated. The crisis has directly impacted the preparation of coastal delicacies, a major attraction for visitors, leading to cancellations and financial losses.

Tourists Disappointed as Coastal Dishes Go Missing
Known as a tourist paradise, Uttara Kannada attracts visitors not only for its scenic beauty but also for its unique coastal cuisine, especially seafood and traditional “desi” dishes. However, due to the shortage of LPG cylinders, hotels and resorts are unable to prepare full menus, disappointing tourists who arrive expecting the authentic culinary experience.

Booking Cancellations Surge Amid Food Crisis
With limited food options available, many tourists are reportedly calling hotels in advance to confirm food availability. Upon learning about the shortage, several have chosen to cancel their bookings, affecting occupancy rates during the peak holiday season.

The shortage comes amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, including the Iran-Israel conflict, which has reportedly disrupted supply chains and impacted industries across the country. The hotel sector in Karwar is among the worst hit.

Hotel Industry Faces Heavy Losses
Local hoteliers say the situation has led to unexpected financial setbacks, especially during a time when business is typically at its peak due to summer holidays.

“Every year during the holidays, our hotel is fully booked. But this time, many cancellations have happened. Tourists come here mainly for our coastal food, and now we cannot serve all items,” said M.G. Rane, a hotel owner.

He added that even VIP guests from across the state and beyond visit Karwar specifically for its cuisine, but are now hesitant due to limited food availability.

Resorts and Homestays Also Affected
The crisis is not limited to hotels alone. Resorts and homestays across Uttara Kannada are also facing similar challenges, as cooking operations remain restricted due to the lack of LPG supply.

Tourism Season Takes a Hit
With summer vacations underway, families had planned trips to Karwar and nearby destinations. However, the ongoing gas shortage has resulted in a noticeable drop in tourist footfall, disappointing business owners who were expecting high seasonal revenue.
