Karnataka Govt Disburses Rs. 8.22 Crore Compensation to Families of 35 Transport Personnel, Minister Ramalinga Reddy Announces Welfare Measures

Bengaluru: In a major welfare initiative for transport employees, Ramalinga Reddy, Karnataka’s Minister for Transport and Excise, on Thursday distributed Rs. 8.22 crore in compensation to the families of 35 deceased personnel of state road transport corporations. The compensation was disbursed during a programme held at the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation head office in Bengaluru.

The financial assistance was provided under the Transport Insurance Accident Insurance Scheme and the Employees’ Family Welfare Compensation Scheme, aimed at ensuring financial security for the dependents of employees who die either in accidents or due to other causes.

Rs. 4 Crore Compensation for Accident Deaths

During the event, the government distributed Rs. 4 crore to the dependents of four transport personnel who died in accidents. Each family received Rs. 1 crore under the Transport Insurance Accident Insurance Scheme, which provides financial protection to employees’ families in case of accidental death while on duty or off duty.

Officials stated that the scheme has already benefited several families across the state.

“Under the accident insurance scheme, compensation of Rs. 1 crore each has so far been distributed in 34 cases, amounting to a total of Rs. 34 crore,” officials said.

Rs. 3.92 Crore Distributed to Families of Employees Who Died Due to Other Causes

Apart from accident cases, the government also distributed compensation to families of employees who died due to medical conditions such as heart attacks, cancer, strokes and other health issues.

A total of Rs. 3.92 crore was distributed to the dependents of 28 personnel, with Rs. 14 lakh given to each family under the Employees’ Family Welfare Compensation Scheme.

In addition, compensation of Rs. 30 lakh was disbursed to the dependents of three personnel, with Rs. 10 lakh provided to each family.

Officials noted that the government had earlier increased the compensation amount under this scheme to support the families of deceased employees.

Increase in Welfare Compensation Amount

The state government had initially fixed the compensation amount at Rs. 3 lakh for families of employees who died due to non-accidental causes. However, considering the increasing number of deaths due to health-related issues, the amount was revised.

The compensation was increased to Rs. 10 lakh from November 1, 2023, and later enhanced again to Rs. 14 lakh with effect from September 1, 2025.

So far, compensation of Rs. 10 lakh each has been provided in 187 cases, while Rs. 14 lakh each has been distributed in 30 cases, reflecting the government’s efforts to strengthen financial support for transport employees’ families.

Assurance of Compassionate Appointments

Addressing the gathering, Ramalinga Reddy expressed condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and prayed that the Almighty grant them strength to overcome the grief caused by the untimely demise of the employees.

He also assured that dependents of deceased personnel would be given compassionate appointments across the four state road transport corporations.

“Eligible dependents will be appointed as drivers, operators, police constables and technical staff, and those with the required qualifications will be considered for the post of junior assistant according to seniority,” the minister said.

He highlighted that the compassionate appointments process is conducted transparently and advised families not to fall victim to external pressure or fraudulent offers.

Advice on Responsible Use of Compensation

The minister urged beneficiaries to use the compensation responsibly to support their families. He advised them to prioritise children’s education, housing construction, and other essential needs, and to keep funds in bank deposits rather than investing in high-risk schemes that promise unusually high returns.

Officials also noted that around 1,400 compassionate appointments have already been provided across the four state road transport corporations.
